I have searched the forum for solutions and checked them all maybe some new sugestions?
    Problem:
when i move the key from acc to on there are no ignition lights, the turbo timer stays off and the ecu talk unit stays off.
all other electrics are working, lights, radio, ac, wipers but when i turn the key to start they all fade out and a faint click comes from the drivers foot well by the fuses, cant locate it exactly.
The car has a mongoose mx200 alarm/imobiliser system that still seems to be functioning properly activating the locks but i cant find a way to disengage it to eliminate it being a possibility.

    what i've checked
had the battery tested at battery world this morning, all good
checked fusable links by the brake booster
    checked fuses in foot well
    checked fuses left hand front
    wiggled wiring behind ignition barrel
    moved transmission shifter to neutral
    Any other ideas?

so what can stop power to the ignition?

    Cheers
    Bruce

    Sounds like the ignition relay......

is your zed an auto ? Autos also have a starter relay.

    Hi Ian
Yes it's an auto, but, i may be wrong, don't the ignition lights come on, and when the key is turned they fade out.??
Can the relay be repaired or just replaced and where ist it located?
    Thanks

Relays are a throw away item.....

relay is behind the fuse panel next to accelerator

When the exact same thing happened to me - it turned out to be a weak connection at the battery terminal!

enough power to turn on small things but when amperage is needed all power disappears such as the ignition lights

Suggest you try wiggling the battery connection and / or resetting it and then trying again

I ended up needing a new battery connection lead as the connector was split - you may find the same thing or it just may need resetting

Others have had the same problem

    Hope this helps

    Goodluck

Do you have a immobiliser ?. If so check that.

Remember there are two battery connections.....

There is the battery negative which goes to the body of the car and to the engine. Green corrosion on the battery terminal is a clear sign of high resistance which only shows up when a high current device is used like a starter motor. All other low current devices like relays and interior lights and dash lights will still function as normal. Make sure that the body and engine connections are clean and tight also. This is the easist to clean and check.

The other wire is the battery positive wire which goes to the starter motor and also to the alternator and then all over the place. This does not normally cause issues except at the battery terminal end so I would suggest just clean and tighten the positive battery terminal only.

******* ALWAYS REMOVE NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL FIRST****

Reason - If your spanner accidentally slips and contacts the car body no harm will be done as the car body is also connected to the negative battery terminal.

If you choose to remove the positive battery terminal fist and the spanner slips then your spanner will be shorting the battery out and you will see a huge spark which will frighten you at the least and weld the spanner to both the car and the terminal. If the short remains for long enough an explosion may result.

++++++++RECONNECT THE TERMINAL IN THE REVERSE ORDER. POSITIVE FIRST. +++++++++

When they "tested" the battery do they load test it or just stick a multimeter on it ?

    Will it jump start ?

Hi Thanks for all your replies:

Brisz; yes load tested to 650cca

MichaelZ, Super Z; I have cleaned and sanded the battery terminal connectors

Twin Terror; I have a Mongoose MX200 alarm/imobiliser, could be the problem but it seams to be arming & disarming properly and i dont know how to disconnect it to eliminate it from the system.

I'm going to try the relay, can they be bought from auto barn or supercheap?

even after searching the web all of similar issues they still have ignition lights on the dash and I dont ......http://www.aus300zx.com/forum/images/smilies/confused.gif

Have you checked the negative lead to the block?

Sorry...I am still convinced its a battery lead at one end because this is exactly what happens when it is not connected with a good contact

Happy to stand corrected - but my 2c is that your problem is related to this!

Only a crank test can truly test a battery (for info - just in case that wasn't done)

Hope you find the problem soon

    Resolved ... Yah!
It was a burnt out wire in the imobiliser setup
    Thanks for your input
