Next teething problem... fuel pump?

    Hi All,

I took the Z for a short test drive out the driveway tonight (couple hundred meters up the road). She was running smooth, all good. pulled into a drive to turn back, went into reverse and lost power (battery terminals lost connection) i hadn't tightened the terminals as the battery was just for the test run. anyway connected the terminals back up and the car wouldn't start but cranked. Then i noticed that the fuel pump wasn't priming when i turned the ignition on. whats going on?

The fuel tank is also quite empty could this have something to do with it? (fuel light not working but needle indicates bottom line). Also thought the battery might not have had quite enough charge either.

    BTW towed it back home.

While i'm here i'll mention the other issues. Thought i'd fixed the coolant leaks by tightening heater hose clamps but something is still leaking around there. i was also getting a descent amount of smoke coming off the passenger side turbo in the engine bay once warmed up. i figure this must just be something spilled on it because i can't see anything that could be burning there at all...
car seemed to warm up fairly quick tonight too... And when i couldn't start it the cranking seemed to be quite rough...

    try

Your fuel pump fuse might have blown

    +1 fuse...

There is a tech on how to bypass, links below. Do that first before you replace the pump itself. Fuel pump fuse is possible but unlikely IMO.

Fuel pump does NOT prime at every start, especially not after a quick stop.
Fuel light probably does work, you may not have run tank low enough: needle must fall below E.

At the bwat as stated above the pump is not actiating because there is pressure in the system. At worst the terminal comming off the battery has caused some electrical mayhem somewhere. You should count yourself lucky you didn't start a fire or fry everything driving the car with the termianls loose

just put new fuel in the tank and it started and ran fine again  not real sure if it was because of fuel shortage but anyway, guess it runs now.

BUT... i have a big hesitation problem (which i also had last night) whenever i touch the accelorator it almost stalls and did a couple of times, so i had to punch the accelorator and give it a few revs to drive it and keep it running (just to put back into the garage). when it does this we are seeing some black smoke too. i'm thinking the smoke could be oil in the exhaust from when the engine blew before the build but could also be from that hesitation. Runs smooth other than this.
I know i've read techs about hesitation so i'm looking that up after i write this. but if someone wants to point me in the right direction it would be appreciated. ;)
I still have a dripping coolant leak from the back too

Oh yeah and the fuel pump fuse was fine and i didn't do the FPCU bypass.

Black smoke is from excess fuel, probably needs a good hard run to sort it and see if it clears up.
    Fix the coolant leak first!!!

Check the cas timing, carry out a boost leak test and check to make sure the VTC solenoids are connected to the correct plugs (easy to mix up with det sensor). Those are all common things after an engine install. Dont worry about the smoke at this stage, get all the other stuff sorted and the smoke should clear.

Cheers guys, i just put my new spark plugs in and that significantly improved things but there is still some hesitation. Just having dinner then going back out to check the timing ;)
Oh yeah and i cleaned the TPS too.
Yes and more detective work on the coolant leak after that too.

Oh and my electric fan is running non stop why is that?

Bad CTS or connection usually results in the fan coming on, may also be high pressure a/c switch not connected.

What and where is the CTS? and where is this a/c switch. likely cause as i have not got the a/c installed...

Coolant Temp Sensor = twin connector on top coolant hard pipe. Likely a bad/dirty connection or broken wire.

oh yeah of course  hmm i'll have a look but i had cleaned the connectors already.

    What about this a/c switch?

... and just to reconfirm ... fix the coolant leak before you go anywhere .... the alternative could be much more than hesitation problems ... lol...!!!!

turns out one of the pins for the CTS had pushed up. fixed that and fan stopped also running much better now too :)
