    I have not tried it but yes, it should work. As you say, it just emulates a serial port!

    Don't most of our consult cables have usb ports on them?

    they do, so they would work only for devices with usb host (i.e. laptop, some wince devices like the newer style all in one dvd etc players for cars, etc)

    do these android things have usb host? (can plug in usb flash drive etc?)

    They do but there is no data exchange available for us developers. So no usb cable connection for Nikoz..

    Benny_C About as subtle as...

    vanos, this looks just awesome. I'll buy that app and run it on my HTC, can you please post up a link to your preferred bluetooth adaptor? Love your work mate! This will be very well received on here, just like Newkleer's ECUTalk equipment. Great to see this kind of development for our cars! :zlove:

    Why? Each of the phones mentioned uses a different operating system. Incidentally, each uses a different programming language (or syntax) and may have other restrictions.

    IPhone = Objective C and must be licensed through Apple (unless phone is jail broken)
    Nokia = Java or C++
    Android = Java
    Windows Mobile = VB.Net, C#.Net or C++

    i think he means he wishes there was something, not that there must be something literally. i.e. how all iphone users think everyone has an iphone so everything must be available for iphone :)

    This is great news for anyone who wants to use an Android tablet as a car PC.

    Im planning to replace everything cluster wise in the drift 32 with a ipad clone aka the Apad,Iped, Epad, etc, They run on the android OS so it should work.

    Im just having trouble finding a good clone with a fast cpu, Ive read about 30+ reviews of the 350mhz and the 500mhz one and they are apparently to slow to do anything accept web browsing on, Even youtube lags up. I wont be using it for this stuff but it would be cool if i could throw my SD card in after a run on the track and check some of the HD go pro footage, These ipad clones would have no chance running 1080p stuff.

    Better of with a car PC still.

    Slightly OT, but I've been looking at WIFI adapters for RS232, such as this one...
    http://www.serialio.com/products/mobile/wifi/WiSnapAAA.php

    If I can get an OBD cable to connect by WIFI to an iDevice, i'll make it my lifes mission to write an iPhone app for it.... but it could also be used for Android or any other devices too. It shouldn't be too hard to port between Android and iPhone?

    could probably work, ive thought of doing similar (i.e. consult->wifi to allow use in iphone etc) but in the end it comes back to being a lot of effort, and a lot of cost, when someone could just buy an netbook, or iPAQ, and permanently have it setup and running, and still be cheaper than iphone+wifi solution.

    I can understand that, especially considering you have already developed a great tool for .Net products.

    iPhones / iPads are better for people that don't want a dedicated solution (moreso the iPhone in that regard) but still want to be able to use a GPS/music player/car diagnosis tool when they are in the car. It's more about versatility.

    I've got a developers license, a MacBook and an iPhone... all I need is the know how and a Wifi adapter. But you're dead right - an iDevice developer could never get the costs of all of that time, effort and tools back...

    Update

    So has anyone here actually got this to work on their Android phone??

    I'm also a bit confuded about the bluetooth device that vanos recommended... When you follow the link, it asks you what powersupply you want?? Do I need a powersupply if its connnected to the consult port??

    I also assume I would need a conzult cable with a serial port on one end?? So cable connects to consult port, bluetooth dongle connects to serial connector on other end of cable and then you just setup your bluetooth and phone to talk to each other?

    Cheers

    Would there be any way to get this to display stuff in graphs/dials like Torque for android does? Because quite honestly, if it could do that, this would be perfect.

    Torque only works for OBDII so would be useless for 99% of zed owners.

    That point being you can list which phone SDKs use which language? :p

    Also, "syntax" and "programming language" are not the same thing ;)
