I have the typical wheel bearing noice on the LHS front and would like to change the bearing ASAP.

Question is, how do you remove the steering rod without damaging it. Evertime I did this on other cars I had to hammer the top of the screw with the nut in place and sometimes damage the nut.

Is there a better way? I don't want to do any damage to the Z.

Also, does the whole caliper assembly have to come off completely to get access to the bearing?
I had a look at the manual and it appears that the bearing is accessed from behind the caliper and in order to get access to the bearing everything needs to come out.

If anyone has done this, is it a PITA exercise? Does the bearing require to be pressed out and in again?

    I don't have a press

Any ideas? Is it worth paying someone to do it?

    Cost perhaps

    Thank you
    Peter

Ok, dont know if you need a press, but the caliper must come off

it's only 2 bolts so dont stress. The rotor should come off fairly easy ( once the caliper is removed ) there are no bolts holding it down. Be careful not damage the rotor. The steering rack, you have to unscrew the bolt but not all the way, and the trick is to use a bigger hammer ( 500g - 800g ) and try to give it one big whack from the side. The stud where the steering rack connects to is Taperd so butting force on the side will get it off. You may not get it off from the first off but keep trying, get a nice clear line of swing and harder yo hit it the better, offcourse mind the bolt and the nut.

    Hope this helps ya!

    See Ya buddy!

Short answer, yes, pay someone to do it.

You will need a press to remove it.

you need a 32mm socket, rattle gun and a press

The other weekend I dismanlted the entire front suspension setup and found the wheel bearing lock nut a bit tricky but I eventually found a way to get it off. The lock nut for the wheel bearings is like the tailshaft one and to get it off I used a 2mm steel wedge that is tapped into the part of the lock nut that is bent inwards between the lock nut and bolt. Then with the rattle gun I put the compressor on 120psi and max torque on the gun with the 32mm socket and it just spun off no worries and straightened the lock nut tabs so it can be reused.

From there the wheel bearing needs to be pressed out. You can get a press from supercheap for $99 but I'd recommend the trade tools one if you plan on doing lots of action with the press.

It's all pretty easy and should take about an hour or two a side.

    I'll give it a go

I have all the tools, incl. rattle gun.

Oh well, I will have to add a press to the collection.

    Thanks guys.
