I need some help, my 1990 300zx TT starts to ping at 5500r/pm and seems to get worse as the revs get higher. I have already checked the timing and it seems fine but i am not sure what the problem is, so if you can help me please do.

    More info req'd

What mods do you have? What boost? Fuel?
Has this just started, out of the blue, for no apparent reason?

the 300 is dead stock with no mods, standard boost, 95 octane with octane booster (roughly 98-99octane), i recently bought the car and has always made the ping ever since i have had it.

Are you SURE the timing is right? What sort of timing light did you use? Sometimes the inductive ones can give weird results...

Adding octane booster to a tank won't increase it by that much. Generally, they raise the octane value of the tank by 3 points or so from memory. Thats 95.3, not 98, from 95 base.

    Use BP Ultimate or similar.

Failed EGR, modified ECU, low fuel pressure, etc etc.

    Start with the simplest.

first off stop being cheap your car needs AT LEAST 98 OCTANE... octane booster is crap and makes the electrodes on your spark plugs turn yellow...

check your boost and timing. you may have a jap spec tune in your ecu that you dont know about.

after that change things like fuel filter and check for vac/boost leaks.
its the small things that make all the difference

and find someone with conzult to check your car for error codes !

What Waztted should have said is check if there is a silly jap spec tune in your ecu. Like a Mines/Kakimoto/Other crazy tuning shop chip. They are renouned for there crazy timing maps and rev limits, like the one on BennyC's, nice and safe at 10,500 rpm

Open the ecu and have a look at the main chip, see if it's been socketed.

Has a 100k service/timing belt change been done?

And viewing Crank Angle Sensor (CAS), is it centrally located with the 3 retaining bolts?

I'm alluding to a potential timing/timing belt problem with this line of question although it may be something else. Hard to diagnose over the 'net.

i have already checked the ECU and is definitely stock, it has not been socketed.

Are u sure it is pinging that u are hearing? the reason im asking this, is pinging at those sort of revs is very hard to hear .(maybee its misfiring or backfiring?)
pinging at that sort of RPM and higher usually causes alot of engine damage.

    Regards,
    Trev

sounds to me like it is pinging, that is why we are trying to avoid that higher rpm, it is of real concern would rather not like destroy a good motor.
