Hey guys, need to get my hands on a cheap'ish laptop for a friend as she does architect stuff and is still studing so can't get something trick'd out for a couple of grand just yet but the laptops for around $1,000 to $1,500 are skanky to say the least.

If anyone has a contact that sells laptops, can they get me in touch with them ?!? 0403 862 947, call me any time asap and all that...

Anyway any help would be super, might even get two especially if that helps with price etc.

    Chat soon

I bought a really good DELL laptop which I use everyday.

Even now nearly 12 months later. I still look at the ads in the catalogues in the mail box and I still recon I got a super deal.

The 1.7 meg Centrino processor actaully ripps DVD's twice a fast as my P4 2.9.

    I was stunned.

I think I paid $1800 with 16:9 high rez screen, 80 gig drive, DVD burner, 4 hour battery, 512meg ram, Fast wireless Ethernet, blue tooth and leather carry case. I love it.

The battery life is awesome and its built like a brick shit house.

They are even cheaper now 12 months on.

I couldnt bring myself to buy a chinese no name laptop. (even an Acer) They are not much cheaper and have an unknown parentage.

Good thing Asus make Sony's laptops for them and are the third biggest notebook manufacturer in the world then eh? :p

All equipment is built to a price.

Just cause ASUS may build Sony laptops is not guarrantee they are building their own to the same standard.

I would think there are some amazing QA measures as well as a better parts list specified for contract OEM manufacture such as Sony.

What may slip through in an ASUS laptop probably wouldnt for a SONY one.

Also In terms of resale I would take a brand name anyday if the price is almost the same.

These comments are only for LAPTOPS. I dont have the same issues with desktop systems.

    Guys

Sony laptops are shit as.. NO R&D. Same goes with DELL.. Dont ge tme wrong people dont find any issues with them... But at the end of the day if you are conscious of who and what makes them then these 2 brands are not the go.. If it is quality you want then you should steer down the path of Toshiba, IBM, Compaq.. these guys spends millions in developing an end to end solution for their laptops.. It is all integrated with software and addons.

tektrader, a centrino chip has nothing to do with speed also. That is a wireles function that allows you to connect to random access points across OZ and utilise the internet. Further more for you to actually use Centrion you havve to pay an additional $500 - $700 for. basically the dell laptops are centrino compatible not centrino ready...

    Just abit of education haha...

As for Adrian my man... Mate pm me if you want i can give you the number of a man and his dog that will look after you mate...

    let me know..?

    Re: Guys

Does it matter ??? Mine connects to wireless anywhere. So Centrino or not it works well. My Inspiron 6000 is Centrino equiped according to the manual. The wireless is seemless.

My statement still stands. The pentium M 1.7 ripps DVD's twice as fast as my P4 2.8 !!

I havent owned an IBM or Toshiba so I wouldnt know.

I do know my Dell works great and with longer battery life than just about anything else I have seen.

    Toshiba

I got the Toshiba M40 Satellite and I think it is way better than the Dell I had before...
Bought it overseas so it was about $2000.

Been a year so far and it's still going great, very good performance, pretty durable and the battery has a pretty good life. I do a lot of CAD and stuff, and play alot of games, so the laptop is definitely not only used for word processing...

But yeah..the M40 is a bit old now, but I favour Toshiba.

And I thought Centrino was a type of processor that used less power to conserve batteries while on the move?

Centrino is wireless technology... it is an intel initiative.

Graham, You may have a cdma wireless connection with a different ISP or yu may be utilising centrino... i dont know? But what i do know is that all the dells i have worked with 000000000000000000's have all ended up being shit after 18 months to 2 years. that is thrashing them though not you standard SOHO use...

good luck with it if its doing great though mate...:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Its like anything... If you look after it it will look after you...

i recommend a rebuild once every 12-18 months... It will keep the machine fresh.

    Different brands

From my work experience i found:

    Dell:
Good value. Probably best bang for the buck. Can get some really sweet deals these days. After heavy use from transcriptionists they started to wear down though. They'd be ok for personal use but dont expect more than 2-3 years out of it. Personally i wouldnt buy one though, as i dont like the large, heavy/wide form factors they sell these days

    Toshiba:
Overall very good. A lot of people I'd talked to think they're the best brand. They'd be my 2nd choice.

    Acer:
Sh%t. Only had a few but had constant warranty issues with them. 2 of them needed the motherboards replaced under warranty.

    Asus:
Only had 2 of these in the company, but they were also sh%t. Both had to be taken in at least once for repair. i definitely wouldnt spend my own money on one..

    Sony:
I don't like them. Don't know about reliability because i refused to buy any. The prices are too high, quality doesnt look that good to me, and i resent the way sony pushes their proprietary tech (e.g. memory stick)

    IBM:
My favourite. These were my preferred option at work. Awesomely reliable. I had laptops that had been punished daily by court reporters for 2+ years and still worked 100%. I bought one myself 3.5 years ago, and never had ANY issues with it. They're expensive, but i think you get what you pay for. I am a bit concerned about the recent buyout by lenovo though :(

So yeah, take it with a grain of salt but thats what i found looking after them for my last company. we had about 30-40 laptops all up.

tektrader what do you mean by "ripping dvds"? taking the data from the disc itself or re-encoding it? If it's ripping the data off the disc, thats bound by the drive speed not cpu anyway?

    Centrino is a marketing term

It refers to a "platform". i.e. certain CPU/motherboard chipset/wireless chip
