not sure with what to go for, prices are pretty similar between telstra/optus cable and other adsl services. I really want to get into the ps2 network gamming especially when gt4 releases. But im also a heavy downloader even on 56k, so for those of you who know...
1.What is gaming like on 256k adsl?
2.What is gaming like on 512k adsl?
3.Telstra's 10gb limit before being capped, is uploads inclusive in this 10gb limit?Thanx guys

Broadband

Telstras 10 gig plan does include uploads, but they have some free gaming mirrors that are free data ie not included in the 10 gig.I am using iinet on a 32gig plan for $79.05 512 speed, and have been very happy with it.Have a look at www.whirlpool.net.au much information.RegardsMark

I have Telstra.....

I am on the Telstra plan. $69 a month, for 10gig limit. But that includes upload and download. I havent had too much of a problem withit, but what shat me the most is that they seem to change their prices whenever they want. This caused a mass controversy a few years back when I had just started my contract. Anyway, things seem to have stabilised for now. Personally, I despise Telstra but at the time, Optus (not available in my street) and a lot of the other broadband providers that exist now werent around a few years back, so it was either Telstra or phone modem. So I just bit the bullet and joined up. I do some online gaming and music downloads and very rarely get close to 3 gig (original download limit). But I'm not a download junkie and online games dont suck down huge amounts of info. Just do what you would do if buying a mobile phone. Shop around, ask questions, and see which deal is best for you.Cheers

I've been with Optus for a few years now

I pay $65.95 a month with a 12gig limit. As has already been stated, Optus as with many other larger companies that offer internet services change their plan quite often.
For example, in the last 4 months Optus has increased its download limit from 3 to 6 then to 12 gigs, and during this same time dropped its price by $5.Out of all the domestic ISP contracts available I believe Optus cable has the fastest download speeds. I can often get download speeds in excess of 500 K-bytes/second and many times the download speed is actually restricted by the server hosting the data and not my internet connection. The other advantage to having cable, and you didn't hear this from me, is you can actually view cable TV through your computer irrespective of which cable provider you chose (Optus or Telstra) ;)

Thanx for the help guys, really cleared

things up a bit, ill definitely do a bit more shopping before i make a choice. There is this "self install" option with both telstra and optus i think with a substantial saving, im assuming that this is setting it up on your pc and not actually running the cable correct?

You need a TV card + antenna splitter +

one of two programs depending on whether you have Optus or Fox.
For more info visit www.austech.info or email me for more information.

Optus and Telstra Cable

Both are 10megabit connections though probably the best you will see or 4 or 5 megabits.

When I was on Optus cable the best I got was about 600 Kilobytes a second from Microsoft, thats not Kilobitts either.Remember Kilobytes and Kilobits are different things.

Thats about 4 megabits, dont think you have a 30+ Megabit connection at home, probably only Kerry Packer would have one of those ;-)

Regards

Now at 48.0 Mbps...

don't know how that translates tho!
ie what does Mbps stand for?
...and it's a wireless network, does that make a difference?

Megabits per second, and 48 megabitts is extremly fast!!But I am sure that both Telstra and Optus arent going to give you a 4megabit connection.Wireless set up, mmmm sounds sweet man!Mark
