So, since purchasing my beast of a 1995 NA Auto Zed, I've now had 3 opportunities to completely fill up the tank (until it clicks) to measure my fuel consumption / economy.

My most recent figure (and I absolutely baby my Z) in urban driving conditions is 15.76L per 100km...

    ...On BP Premium 98!

Jeez louise! Talk about thirsty!!

    [TIS][TIS][TIS]

Surely this is too much right? For an NA... And I would like to emphasize that I really do baby my Z everywhere...

I filled up 44.35L (until clicks) and only got 283 km :(

    -----------------------

Anyway, I've booked my Zed for a service with Barry from Adelaide Z in early June, should I be asking for Barry to check for anything in particular to improve my fuel economy...

Also, I've noticed he offers an "Induction Integity Test" for $50... Should I be getting this done too, as part of my service?

Any constructive feedback or advice, much appreciated! :D

Amanda has a 92 na auto zed and fills up on bp 98 and punches out around 500-550km a tank. I also this Tom is getting similar figures and his engine is in better health than amandas. 2 killer wasps difference was it Tom? Lol.

I would be strongly recommending buying new oxygen sensors and installing. It's by far the first item to crank up your fuel usage. Secondly. Induction. If you still have the stock panel filters. Be sure that they're clean and free flowing. If in doubt. Pod filter. While on the induction side of things. Your air flow meter, give it a birthday and clean the sensor hot wire. If this is a little dirty your ecu will be reading false info regarding air flow. Potentially upping the consumption. Also small things like vaccum leaks. Oddly enough, sticky brakes. Drive line problems. Tires. All small issues that can account for increase in fuel consumption.

If you really haven't any idea where to start. Barry is a good first base to start. He has been around long enough for you to feel safe in knowing he won't take you for a ride. And to censerely consider his recommendations.

All you can do is start at the beginning and work you way through the problems. You are kn the high side of fuel consumption. But even after you replace and renew some parts. It will only better it slightly. Babying it is all well and good but if your constantly stop and starting. Being more city bound. Your always going to have higher consumption. Regardless.

I'd be happy to have a look at your zed but I'm too far away. Baz should get you sorted.

I appreciate the constructive feedback :)

I will speak with Barry, but in the mean time see what I can do myself :zlove:

No worries mate. If you need any help just pm. When Amanda got her zed we were in the same high fuel consuming boat. It's been a while but we've got it where we want now. Fuel consumption wise though. Lol. The list of other need to do jobs is huge. And i don't have the time to do so just yet :(

Anyways good luck. Always only a pm away.

Before shelling out for a new set of O? sensors, what you can do is completely disconnect them. This makes the ECU assume that they are reading 100% normal, so you can diagnose whether they are affecting economy in any sense. There's a connector somewhere in the engine bay... blah blah... it's late, I don't know... something something tech section... I'm going to bed :p

Saying how many Km's you get to a tank is useless for comparison - The only half accurate way to measure it is litres per 100km, and even this is subjective to the pump cutting off at the same time every time.

I monitor my car every time i fill up, and using 98ron for every top up, i can bank on ~9l/100km for country, and anywhere from 15-17 round town.. Have a quick search, you'll soon find that 15's are average, and that that's why we own zeds.. to kill the environment right?

I personally wouldn't be too worried, as long as your getting lower on the open road.. My combined economy is currently sitting at 13.04l/100km. But I travel to and from Canberra/Dubbo every month or so..

I understand how bypassing the det sensor causes an 'open loop' so ECU reads "normal" but, I thought if you disconnected the o2 sensors it would break the circuit? Won't the ECU keep wanting to read sensors?

Found the right thread to explain my o2 sensor question above

"o2 sensors disconnected WTF" in the tech section!

Guess you don't need to bypass the sensors,as you would the det sensor because the ECU won't register an error & isn't that effected by their absence, as is not the case with the det.

I will be disconnecting them now & see if it runs any different? That was a great thread

I can't comment on fuel consumption around town (odometer is not reliable) but city-to-city (ie., posted mileage) my Aus-spec NA (with power mods) on 95RON OR 98RON gives around 8.3L/100km, using cruise-control, aircon on, and 'spirited' overtaking.
This equates to over 700km per tank on the highway.

    It can be done.

I've done it 16 litres to 202 km.

I'll challenge the guy to the 7 L/100k.
I get that at 70kmph in 5th with cruise on.
Might get driven off the road on the highway doing that

Best I've got is 9.8l/100k. I have a note book somewhere with all consumption fugures from a Brisbane to Tasmania return trip (6000+km). From memory the worst consumption was around 14L/100km.
