I know my car is nearly 16 years old, but the last few weeks she's really got the rattles about her! I reckon I can hear about 10 different rattles in the cabin of the car! Its driving me crazy!

Does anyone have some brilliant ideas on how to solve this?

there's only one thing you can do...

tighten everything down. Its a long process that involves finding and identifying the rattle and then either tightening the respective panel or finding some means to shut it up. Some people have stuck sound deadening material behind the plastic triming or even foam. I started doing this but eventually gave up. Thankfully, most of my rattles are gone and between the drone of my exhaust and the stereo i cant hear them anyway. They only become apparant on real bumpy roads.

    Cheers

    First step...

1 Empty EVERYTHING out of the car, including glovebox, center console, boot etc.
2 Tape (masking tape so no damage) over eveything which MAY rattle (eg removable face of head unit, glovebox door, center console lid)
3 With a friend, go for a drive and try to locate any other rattles.
4 Get your mechanic to check the suspension, frame mounts etc.
5 Adjust bonnet and hatch latches (see tech section), replacing rubber corner bushes if necessary.
6 If you still have rattles, find volume control on stereo.
    Best of luck

I'd go one step further and say remove everything from inside the car

i.e. including trim panels, dash, etc. Go for a drive and get a friend to find what is rattling and then find a way to secure it. Once you have removed all rattles with the majority of the trim removed you can start adding trim bits on and test drive to check for more rattles.

I've redone the rubber undercoating on the belly of my zed to 1) stop rust on parts that has lost the rubber undercoating 2) stop road noise.

Finally the last step in removing rattles is to urethane foam fill the chassis rails and door sills to strengthen the chassis to prevent chassis flex which causes things to rattle and work loose. I'm getting a 12 pack of foam to do all the unibody which will cost about $500 as a guess.
