I took the pan off the auto trans today and I'm not happy Jan...

First bad news was finding out that all but 2 of the bolts on the pan could be undone with my fingers... then I found there was no gasket either! That explains why there was fluids leaking all over my floor recently.

Then I saw the colour of the fluid draining out...

Finished getting the pan off, etc and here's what lies beneath:

So what do I do from here?

The gasket is still stuck to the pan, you can see it in the pics.

It is not unusual for a trans that is overdue for a service to have that ammount of debris on the magnet. Is it slipping, not shifting or have any vibrations in it?

Slipping when it's hot/warm. Still has drive if you manually shift down a gear or take your foot off the throttle.

So is there a difference between a 'service' and a 'rebuild'?

A service is just a flush, filter and new fluid. A rebuild is just that, rebuilt internals back to factory spec.

Spend a few dollars on a service kit and fluid, may just be enough to stop it slipping.

Fluid is dextron 3, it takes about 6-7 litres when doing a service, filter kit is fk1552 for a tt i think.

Awesome, thanks. Think I'll look at a rebuilt auto or a conversion soon though.

    IB ?????

Doesn't a service also include adjusting bands? I've assisted with a service on a Falcon and part of that service included adjusting bands.

    Doesn't look pretty Keiran :(

    You could try a flush and refill, a pro-job to do properly, but I fear you'll need to invest in a re-build @ ~$2.5k or a 2nd hand tranny @ ~$500.

Most importantly, fit an aftermarket cooler, as the rad cooling is insufficient and likely to be partially blocked with friction material (a major cause of failure).

yeah some old boxes had externally adjustable bands, but not the z32 trans as far as i know

Right - new fluid, new thicker engine oil and filter, took her for a spin... can't tell if it's fixed it till Saturday I guess when I drive up to Sandgate for the dyno day. One thing's for sure, she doesn't slip in 1st ;) ! I'm probably gonna look for someone selling a recently rebuilt trans, otherwise it's a rebuild/conversion I guess :(

Oh and I heated up the strainer while drying it which dislodged an awful lot of 3-5mm round chips of my precious gearbox :( so I'm guessing she hasn't got much longer to go...

Hope you're not planning to run it on the dyno  I could see that ending badly!

Well I just gave it a thrashing then and she's holding up fine....
But if I don't run her, what am I gonna run? My Yaris?

Hahahaah you're most welcome to, although I'm undecided as to whether to run or not. The drive up there will give me an idea I guess.
