...and to start with, let me say that I have searched the forum, but the search will only let me see the first page, and cant use the fix of going to the last page either.
Anyway, driving along the the other day the car has a massive backfire. Immediately thought of the cats, so got her up off the ground and gave the cats a tap, and heard the sound of loose gravel in them, bugger.
So question is, can I keep driving with the cats broken, or is this too risky.
2nd question, is there a way to gut them till I get them replaced?
3rd question, since I need to replace them, should I replace them with any cat I can find, or would high flow cats be the way to go (considering replacing entire system and getting some headers finally at the same time)
Thanks for any help, and please dont get upset if I dont reply for a day or two, I dont have much spare time at all these days and dont have the time to get on the forum every day.:(

    some answers....

you should get the broken CATS fixed soon.... I drove around with mine loose and broken for a few weeks but i was advised against it. If the loose bits position themselves in a way that restricts or blocks your exhaust it could do bad things to your engine. As for replacement, if you can afford it get some Highflow cats. They will complement a nice exhaust system later on down the track....

    Cheers

TEMPORARY FIX - Do what the naughty Japs did to mine!

Take the cats off get a bar of steel and knock the middle honeycomb of the cats out. Although the epa may not like this it prevents damage to your car and is a safe option for teporary fix and prevent bits coming loose and poss. damage to the engine. This was done to mine and I didnt notice till I got exhaust done.

PS DONT BREATH IN THE STUFF THAT COMES OUT OF THEM WHE YOU DO KNOCK IT OUT. CAN USE OIL TO ABSORB THE SHIT BUT WILL HAVE A SMOKEY EXHAUST FOR A LITTLE WHILE AFTER.

    Cats

The best cats for performance and longer life are the stainless steel substrate ones. They have larger holes to let the gas through, and don't melt down as easily.

They are round - about 100mm in diameter and would be a perfect replacement in size. They are around $400 each fitted.

The other types of cats are ceramic substrate and oval in shape so they won't fit side by side like the standard ones. If you get the round ceramic substrate cats they are not much good - quality and performance.

    Hope this helps.

    Save your money.

Do what Wokburner suggested and just gut your cats. It might be illegal but on a Twin turbo, gutting the cats and pre-cats can release up to 15 horsepower.

Not much good here, we don't have pre-cats, but we do have the EPA.

I would never gut the cats for a long term solution

With a good complete exhaust system they are not going to be that detrimental to your daily drivers performance NA or TT.

Its not only much worse for the environment to gut them, but much worse for your health too (and others) who breathe around it.

Hope you dont sit at the lights too long

Also I have heard of BIG $$$$$ fines for removing or gutting your cats. (should you get caught). If you really dont want the cats, get an LPG conversion

Dont bother trying to save money. When you bought a zed your forfeited any chance to save money as it is. Bottomless money pits they are  But so many goodies to buy for them!

As I suggested this is a TEMP fix to prevent damge to the engine?

Not a permanent fix and yeah your right if it only makes 7kw differnce on a 500kw GTR then a street car wont notice it! Seen it on the dyno GTR with and without. MB

Thanks for all the input :zlove:...

....never had cat problems before so all comments are helpfull. As for gutting the cats, as I said if I do it, it will be just to keep the car going till I get them replaced. I doubt I'll be able to gut them though as they are welded in and to far from the nearest joint to be able to smash them out. So next question, anyone know where to get decent cats from in or near the hunter region?
