Removed a manual gearbox and found that it was real grimy in the bell housing area, not sure if it was oil from the motor or the box itself. Is there a seal on the input side of the box that can be changed? In my opinion there should be one but if there is it seems access to it is within.

Hi yes the seal (if there is) for the spigot shaft in the bell housing.

    IB ?????

Most likely from Engine Rear Main Seal but could also be from gearbox front seal.

Agreed, all the filthy bellhousings I've seen have been caused by a leaky rear main crank seal.
