So, my stainless clutch cable finally arrived from the states. After rounding off the damn nut, I finally managed to get the old perished rubber one off with a vice grips, and get the new one in. Of course the new line will be full of air, so me and my mate are bleeding it through. I erred on the side of caution to make sure there was no air left in the line. Did it the same as bleeding brakes, pumping the pedal and holding down, refilling the resevoir etc. But the damn pedal goes all the way to the floor with little effort. Before, it required a LOT of effort to operate the clutch while the car was off (w/o vacuum assist). Now, I haven't started the car since putting the new line in. Also, there are no leaks on either end of the clutch line, and it's not overflowing out the resevoir. So what am I missing?
I searched again and found more info, but still could use help So, it seems I bled out the master cylinder correctly, but then the slave needs to be bled. I looked at this article http://www.zparts.com/zptech/articles/maintenance/tl_z32clutch/Z32_clutchadj.html but some of the info seems to be backwards. Would I have to bleed out the slave as well just because I changed out the clutch line? Also: yes I am a noob at clutch systems.
bleed from all 3 points There is a bleed nipple on the Master Cyl / OUt near the HICAS unit, and on the slave. Start with the master, then the one near the HICAS unit, then slave, then do it again for good measure... then mabye once more for luck. and hopefully its all sweet.
I have never bled a clutch from anywhere other than the Slave Cylinder, and I have never had a problem. 10 min. job.:zlove: The tech article is written for a US Z32 which will have the Clutch Master Cylinder on the left side of the car. If you have fitted a S/S braided clutch hose, i assume it went directly from the M/Cyl to the Slave Cylinder (like the one sold by UAS), if so, the front, inner mudguard, Bleeding Nipple is no longer connected to the system, and does not require bleeding.:zlove:
thanks guys. This is not the UAS-style one - it is from AMZ, and direct replacement for the stock rubber line that goes between the gearbox and the hard line, which runs from near the driver's side dump pipe up the firewall to the master cylinder thing. So, I take it the slave line bleed nipple is near the hicas unit - so, uh, where is the filler neck?
The Slave Cylinder is bled from the nipple on the side of it(under the car, on the gearbox housing). It is topped-up at the clutch reservior, same as the front nipple.
Re : Clutch bleed Because the S/S line you have used is a direct replacement for the oem rubber hose you will have to keep bleeding the two bleed nipples over and over again to purge the system of air bubbles. It is a badly designed system and a real PITA to bleed and will happily swallow a few bottles of brake fluid in the process. You have no choice but to keep bleeding, try facing the zed uphill while bleeding Make sure you continually top up the master cylinder because it is TINY and holds "buggerall" fluid
Oh crap. The one we were bleeding was pn the gearbox housing. So will have a look and try to locate this second nipple near the hicas unit and go from there.
pics for the clutch bleeding point This is the bleeding point i used when i had to rebleed the clutch, hope this well help.
