I have been playing around for the past 2 days with Linux, That is Ubuntu + Beryl.. As Seen On "Call For Help TV"

    I am now a convert, That OS is brilliant...:D :D :D :D :D :D

If anyone has a spare HDD I would suggest chucking it in your PC and loading these on it... Its worth a look..

Bit of stuffing around to get the Wireless network cards to work, but other than that no probs....:D

    Features of Beryl....

    To Install....

    Ubuntu

Then this one for the Beryl upgrade...

    walk through

Yeah, i played with the OS a while back, but lost interest due to missing all my MP3's and instant messaging etc...
There is some great open source software out there, well worth a look. The major reason why i find it so good is to stick it to Bill Gates hahaha... and the fact that it is free and can be legally shared copied and passed on.

Oh... and redhat linux is great, and has good online support etc, but costs money.
There are many projects out there that aim to allow integration of windows and linux, to make the windows-->linux transition easier.

For those that are interested, there are a few good bootable distributions out there, even ones that can be booted off a thumb drive. PM me if you want to check out the linux operating system, and i can distribute a copy your way ;)

Linux as your Operating System of choice

    Hi Brooksie,

Yep, I have been using Mandrake 10.0 for what seems like a few years now, and it is fantastic! A very easy way of making the change over from windows to Linux (read not hard to navigate around and find things, a very familiar feel about it). Now of course Mandrake has been upgraded to Mandriva One, I just got hold of the September 2006 Linux Format magazine from the U.K. (which I believe is one of the best Linux magazines out there) which comes with a live CD to run it off your optical drive or install it on your H.D.D. your choice. It has one of the best installers out there! And partitioning is also just as easy - give it a go.:)

Here is the 'home' page for Mandriva for a bit of a looky:

    Mandriva Home

All the best with it and enjoy.

    Cheers, Kaz.

honest to god question.... not being a smart ass... for once :p .... but why is linux better than windows.... other than being 'easier'... and we have to admit.... windows isnt hard to navigate around... a chimp could do it...... are there any other reasons linux is a better choice? do most other programs work on it... ie arent most programs made, made to run on windows... is there just a small few that will run on a linux system?...... and am i right or wrong.... just to double check... is linux an operating system?????

Beryl seems to be something to make linux feel like OSX... Pretty much all those features come standard on Macs..

Web servers are definately better Unix based if only for security if anything over Windows Server... But for home PC's it's almost impossible for most people to make the switch from Windows purely because of the limited hardware and software support on Unix based kernels.

Redhat is probably the best kernel, Fedora is nice too...

Tried playing any games on it or running other Windows based software etc? There is some emulation software to get some basic things to work, but alot dont sadly...

well, yeah, if you want to use windows software, you better stick with windows.

certainly if you're a gamer, windows is the only option.

i don't have a need for much/any windows software. run dual boot, but rarely boot to windows.

Yep that's pretty much it, but most day to day users need Windows for the reasons stated above. All web servers should run some form of Unix based kernel though, I'd never run any website on Windows Server software myself...
