So got the new engine in, heads were done by Blackwell race engines, has new supertech .5mm oversized valves with duel valve springs, so it is idling fine but lifters are noisy as hell, even pulled off timing covers and ran it to make sure was not coming from their, oil pressure is good. what else could it be and if lifters how do i fix it. also running cheap oil from repco 15w 40 could this be the problem? HELP i have spent a fortune on this engine and just want it running properly. Thanks

Firstly contact Blackwell race engines to make sure all is well and they are aware of this.
Sometimes on fresh rebuild you need some run time for the lifters to pick up.
Did you strip and clean the lifters? did you back fill (part fill) with oil at time of assembly?

Sometimes they need to be driven

I've had engines that idle for 20 mins with noisy lifters. Drive around the block once or twice and it goes

    Blackwells

Have contacted Blackwell's and he wants me to pull the plenum and rocker covers and check to see if anything suspicious. he is also checking with the employee who assembled.

    Drive It

Had it out on the road but still the same for about 10k's off and on load.

    The way to go...... ;)

It might help to send a you tube video to them as well before you pull the plenum etc. as most employees will be adamant that they installed it correctly to their bosses even if they are not 100% sure. The video is some sort of proof that there is a problem that relates to them (the lifters)

It also becomes something tangible to hear on a video as describing any noise - let alone lifter noise can be difficult at the best of times i.e. could be loud or soft / metallic or dull / a tick or even a tock  etc.
It can really help sometimes - as noises can be difficult to describe to someone else - even if there are not many causes for lifter tick.

Good luck - hope you get it solved soon

Also might pay to take it back too Bracewell's and see if they will stump up for a tow or go halves at least, that way nothing can go wrong on the drive back and then have them blame you. But as SuperZ said, video it first send it too them and then go the tow to them option.

    VCT

So i changed the oil this morning from a 15w40 to 10W30 put it back together without timing covers and ran it again. so under closer scrutiny it is coming from the front on both inlet sides, almost sounds like it coming from the VCT gears, is this possible? will try and post video clip.

10k should do it, but I had Kitty sitting for 8mths and when I started it to go to Goulburn (car show) it was still ticking when I pulled in to Dubbo for fuel 150Km. It was a lot quitter but still ticking.
It took another 100km for the noise to finally stop. No problems with it.

Quite possible the two problems do sound very similar.

that does not sound like lifters, lifters are constant and either rattle or not. that seems to be something else cutting in and out, have you got a mechanics stethoscope? even a solid steel bar, you will soon find it

From what you've described you have VTC noise. Verify this by activating the VTC either

    a) by activating the solenoids in consult

    Or

    b) by grounding the green and black/white wires on the solenoids.

If you do this correctly the engine will idle rough, and your noise should disappear if it is indeed related to the gears. I can sell you new BDE gears for $850/pair if this turns out to be the case.

    VTC Noise

Running Haltech Platinum Pro so not sure if that function is available, Pulled Plenum and inlet rocker covers today and all looks good, will put it back together tomorrow and try your suggestion. thanks

    Duel Valve Springs

Duel Valves Springs may be the cause of the Rattle copied this from the internet
    VTC Noise
The noise is typical with aftermarket higher-pressure valve springs that cause the cams to over-rotate on every valve-closing event. This over-rotation causes the VTC piston to screw itself into the VTC helix and overpower the piston return spring. As the cam continues to rotate, the valves close and the valve spring pressure diminishes to the point where the return spring slams the piston back to its stop creating the audible tick that is indicative of a noisy VTC.

By design, the VTC primary function is to advance the intake cams 20 crankshaft degrees from off idle to roughly 5800 RPM to increase torque in this RPM range. At idle and high RPM the VTC is in its static ?zero advance? position which reduces overlap for smooth idle characteristics and increased torque at higher RPMs; however, at idle there is sufficient time between valve open and close events to allow the VTC piston to move its full stroke for greatest noise production. At higher RPM the noise may not be as loud due to the other competing high RPM noises, but more than likely the cams are not 100% in control of the intake valve timing and power suffers.

    sounds like VCT

    And the haltech runs VCT

    Follow Robs steps.

    Haltech

I know Haltech contols the VCT thru the Outputs section, not sure on how to have Haltech swicth them on when out side of the perimeters set?

    Problem Found

ROB260 operated the VTC as per Rob's advice and bingo Rattle Gone, Much thanks guys for helping solve the issue, so happy the motor is OK. Now just need the BDE gears. More money to sink into this motor it better perform fingers crossed
