    Hi fellas,

Ive scoured the search function and cant find a definitive answer to this (or maybe its just because I cant find an answer I understand...).

Once warm, on the odd occasion my idle goes from around 700rpm to 1500rpm. Sits there for a while and then goes back to 700.

    Ideas?

i believe its the throttle sensor,
i had the same problem once, had to rest some errors on the computer as my ecu was running safety mode with knock sensor error and changed + adjustment to the throttle sensor, now running perfect

Had a problem with idle yesterday.
Thought it might be related to an electrical problem. ie my battery was FLAT after not driving my Zed for almost 2 weeks.

Jump started and the BTconsult/NikoZ screen was reporting 13.8 volts charging, but idle was up around 1200 and TPS was much higher than the 0.36V I had set (NB: auto transmission)

I fiddled with the connector on the TPS and everything back to normal.

You might need to get a can of contact cleaner

Found this product at your local JayCar electronics store.
It is a conductive grease that will prevent corrosion of contacts.
I seem to have an ongoing corrosion problem on my CAS connector.
I normally use contact cleaner spray to neutralize the white powdery oxidation, then wiggle the plug in and out to clear the contact surface.
The problem comes back in 6 months and if I don't clean it again the car will refuse to start one day.

This is what I need. If you use it, be very precise when you spread this conductive grease on your oxidized plugs and sockets because if you lazily smear between two adjacent contacts it will bridge and short.
I am going to use a flat tooth pick to apply this right into the curved contact surface. $10 for a good sized tube :D

I'm thinking that's really not going to be a good idea lol.

Cue ongoing intermittent and very annoying electrical gremlins...

Been using the same grease for over 10 years on my Z's. Never caused... nor can I prove its prevented... any issues

Yes that's good stuff all right. Also recommend lanolin grease or spray. Because its a natural product it can be washed out a little easier if you regularly clean your engine bay but I've had plenty of success with it when applied to electrical connections that are prone to corrosion.

700 is a little low to begin with -if me is check TPS and adjust base idle and see his you go from there

I would have thought using a conductive grease in multi contact connectors would be risky? Learned something new today :p

Certainly need to use something. I've never seen a car that suffers from so much corrosion in it's electrical contacts!

I did the whole TPS clean and it seems to be fairly steady at around 800rpm now. Happy camper!

How does it trip the knock codes?

    Hey Drno300zx

To clarify - are you saying the throttle position sensor was actually causing the knock codes and you either adjusted (because it was wrong) or cleaned the contacts and it was then fine?

Don't doubt this - I'm just curious as to how it trips the knock sensor into action

    Regards

    JC

700RPM is the target idle speed for a Manual, 750 is for Auto.

It is, that is why I added my comment on being careful.

I think I have to adjust my TPS (down) now

    Before cleaning my CAS plug
    [IMG]
After poking a tiny bit of black carbon grease.

The idle seems higher now but maybe the car just letting me know it hasn't been driven for a few days. I also did my TPS plugs, I think I might have to adjust the TPS down

Yep, understand that. I guess my concern would be, when you plug it back together, will any of the grease be squeezed out from the curved 'socket' resulting in possible shorting, either now or in the future. You'd have to be very very careful with your application of the grease for this not to happen.

But, interesting idea, if it works for you, great :zlove:

I was never that careful with application. Held the plug upside down and put 1 drop per terminal. All connectors throughout engine bay have been done this way, as I occasionally use a high pressure cleaner. Only adverse affect is the polished plenum etc doesn't react too well to the process

Jumpy idle this past week seems to be from a small crack in the vac hose between the accordian hard pipe and the steel hardpipe mounted on the passenger side below the power steering reservoir. I say seems to be because it is the only thing I changed and my car is suddenly driveable again.
