It seems a typical conception that a 2JZ is a stronger engine than the VG30DETT...

    But!

Say if you were to rebuild both engines with the same forged internals- e.g. conrods, pistons etc.

Would one of them be stronger than the other?

Would the VG be capable of producing more torque because of the V configuration?

    Cheers :zlove:

    Only what I've read

Before I bought my first "Aust" Zed I had thought about buying a supra and as memory serves me it was a general acceptance among my friends on the Gold Coast that a VG could never match up in stats and muscle to the 2JZ.

Again as you have implied, this could be a mis-conception

IMO I think the 2JZ has the edge, shame they wrapped it in rags....(New 93+ supra......... My god what were they thinking?)

The 2JZ gets its 'bulletproof' reputation for being internally very strong in stock form, able to take a lot of bolt on mods before needing upgrades.

The VG30 can take fewer mods than the 2JZ before needing major upgrade (also the VG30 is usually older than the 2JZ).

That said, with a fully rebuilt engine both engines would be almost equally strong. Not sure about torque figures though. ;)

    Cheers

check out Sydney z car club web site, car of the month link, the v6 got 600hp on standard internals, dyno sheets there too.tough engines in my book.

    red32 You talkin' to me?

If I was rebuilding an engine for a Z31-32, I'd be looking at a VG30 of some sort. Likewise, for the Supra, a 2JZ would be the go. 'Cause if you were looking at an engine swap, engineering certs would be needed, and the 2JZ would be too long for the Zed engine bay. If I was gonna use the engine for another application, a ski-boat for example, I'd look at the Toyota motor. But then, I'd probably use an LS1 for that!

Thanks for the replies so far!

Not intending to do a swap or anything like that, just annoys me that people are so in love with the stock 2JZ engine, while labelling the VG "made of glass" (yes hpi that means you!) and i wondered if both engines were built with the same internal components which one would have the edge over the other.

Its quite a compliment really that toyota delayed the release of the supra by 3-4 years after the zed was released so that they could redesign and over-engineer the supra... pity the zed looks so much darn better! :D

the v of the engine will notgive more torque

alot of people seem to thing this but it doesnt matter what shape your cylinders are aranged in it wont change anything , a ls1 isnt toruey cause its a V its cause its 5.7 l , the zed motor seems tough to me but i would beleive that the 2j is a little better , i just get anoyed when people start saying the vg crap compared to a rb25 , ive driving a few r33s and it feels like they only run on boost they just feel soft , slow and boring i dont see why every ones into them

From what I've learnt over the years it's the bore:storke ratio that has the greatest effect on the torque one motor will make compared to another of the same capacity. ie. more stroke will give higher torque but the trade off is in the ability to rev. The VG is over square which means it has a larger bore than stroke, while the 2JZ is square, having equal bore and stroke. So theoretically the 2JZ can make more torque at lower revs while the VG can be built to rev higher.

There is a well known Supra from the Gold Coast with standard internals which does ~700hp at the wheels, awesome car. A lot of people don't like the VG30 because of poor engine accessibility, a straight six is easier to work on and simpler in some ways when modifying.

Not knocking the VG, its a good motor but not high profile in this country compared with the straights.

some of toyota's bottom end engineering is superb,
take the 1UZ-FE for example, 6 bolt main bearing caps

Its not just the supra, toyota generally make strong engines and mechanicals in general.

They most certainly do. A close friend of mine decided to supercharge his SV11 Camry before sending it to the wrecker. He bought a cheap supercharger, fabricated a bracket and bolted it up. The supercharger clutch was wired in through the windscreen wiper stalk and when engaged it sounded like a duck quacking. That, coupled with the absence of bonnet (the supercharger interfered with it) made it the funniest looking and sounding vehicle i have seen to date and it pulled some absolutely epic front-wheel burnouts. That was on a stock 2S-FE motor, with no other mods aside from the supercharger. The wheels popped long before the engine had a chance to self-destruct.

800+hp daily driven 2JZ's on a stock bottom end. Nuff said really.

Its really like comparing oranges with apples, z32 vg30's havent got a strong bottom end in comparison to the 2JZ, but a Ceima vg30 has alot more webbing and stengthening in the block. So if you are comparing stock bottom ends, out of the Z32 Vg30 and the 2JZ, the 2JZ is stronger.

Interesting comment, where did that info come from? I can pic a VG30DET block for comparison with a VG30DETT item :)

    I think Toyota

make better = more reliable engines than Nissan, but terribly boring cars. I have a Soarer with the 4l V8, which is very bullet proof. The car itself looks quite boring (just what you need to drive to/from work though, incredibly comfy) When you want to have fun, get the ZED out.

Met a guy through ebay that put a 2JZ in a 280Z. Purred like a cat, and was almost undrivable in the wet - too much power.

    How about a 300 ZX with the Toyota 4l V8, or the 2JZ ???

    Sorry guys, just joking
