I love my car and all, but there is one thing that is driving me crazy - interior noises!
I'm getting creaking noises coming from around the targas, dash and somewhere in the rear.
Obviously it is to be expected from a 20 year old car, but is there any way to fix this? Would dynomat solve the problem or is there another way to "tighten up" the car?
My other car is roughly the same age, but feels brand new. I just want the zed to be the same.
I know I'm having a big whinge over nothing but this is just something that really gets to me.

A few solutions that I have found work extremely well:

    1. Drive with the window open.
    2. Crank your music up.
    3. Spend a weekend chasing all of the loose parts, poor fittings, replace sound deadening, etc.

I go for option 1. Nice fresh air down here in Tassie :(

check all the panels are on tightly.. if they are on tightly and you still get some rattle your looking at dynamat/foam to put behind the panels..

if you need dynamat i can hook you up with large quantities

Sounds good. How expensive is dynamat?

    Quite (subjective). lol.

I recommend going in and tracking down each creak / squeak as best you can. Just try to replicate them while stationary. Quite often it can be fixed with a bit of sealant, wd or grease if you find it's actually coming from outside of the car etc. In my case it was my suspension bushes that needed regreasing (Not sure if you're supposed to grease them, but it helped me anwyay).

That doesn't sound that big.. How much would I need to do the whole car?

hmm... I've had this problem. Sounds to me like you're not driving fast enough. Your tyres should be squeeling louder than your engine and your stereo.

    Worked for me

The other option is a noisey and/or droney exhaust. This method works really well for reducing conversation in the car too, if thats your thing.

    Screwdriver...

Usually when they start making a noise it's because things weren't put back together properly or something is missing. My advice is to just track down where the sound(s) are coming from and first see if it's something obvious, if not, get your screw driver out and start removing, replacing and reassembling.

It will take time and patience...but it's probably the only way to cure it. But yeah, they are 20 years old now...it's not going to be like a new car especially once they have lost their virginity from previous owners doing their handy work...

    Cheers

Yeh it gives me the shits too... being 20 years old tho its hard to fix. Alot if the time when people remove trim pieces etc, they break alot of plastic clips, forget screws and just dont put stuff back together properly, best thing to do is to start with the trims and look for missing clips and screws and start replacing. Being a targa they do squeak and are less rigid then their slicktop cousins, i think strut bars etc may help tightening the car up, but am not 100% sure:eek:

1 sheet is enough because you dont need to go over the whole car... just in parts that rattle... eg. where plastic meets the metal

you will need 2 sheet max

I'm pretty sure my ebay strut bars and persistent noise pinpointing have quietened down if not eliminated all the creaking / squeaking. Can definitely feel and hear the difference because of my 4x4 fun park style driveway.

    Cheers for the replies guys.

So sounds like I need to screw everything in properly, insert some dynamat (wouldn't hurt, even if I don't need it) and invest in some strut bars.

Let's hope that solves the problem or we might see another zed in the for sale section in about 12 months

Exhaust is already ridiculously loud (I hate it. Gives me ear aches) but I can hear the interior noises when I slow down for corners. They're the worst when I'm turning corners anyway coz everything is flexing.

If you have a look at any of the plastic panels that are fitted in the car. They had a weird strip of furry tape on all the joins. Just to stop squeaks.

The furry strips where self adhesive when new but they fall off after a while. So most people when they pull the trim out throw the strips.

Each of these areas are prone to squeaks now. Purely cause the furry strips are gone. Plastic rubbing on plastic does it every time.

i reckon one of the big culprits is around the glove box area. a few places there for bits to rattle and if you've ever removed the box, chances are it wasn't put in and tightened up the same way.

i had someone drive the car up and down the road a few times while i looked around from the passenger seat.
a screwdriver to tighten up bits is handy, also look at using electrical tape to wrap around some metal brackets then screw through the tape to act as a dampener and also the foam tabs you put under furniture to stop furniture scratching your floor.

i had an annoying rattle in the car for years. after being off the road for 12 months, now she's back on the road the rattle has gone. never figured out what it was, just happy its gone. i'm dreading the day it comes back.
