    Hi all,
Half way through a timing belt service on my TT. It had an oil leak before we pulled it down and turns out it was coming from the VCT cam gear, not the cam seal. Also you can turn the center of the cam gear so its buggered.

Whats the best solution? Do I have to fork out another $600 on new cam gears?
I dont want to loose the VCT. What does everyone do in this situation?

Part number of current gears is: OZ26-0139
    45V15

Anyone have a good set laying around?

    Any help appreciated.

    Cheers,

Some people weld the seams to stop the leak and lose the VCT - you may have balance issues though.

Just grab a good second hand set off the FS section here..

Is there a big difference without the VCT? I really dont want to change the way the car performs. Someone has spent alot of money on it before I bought it and it performs well as is.

Yes, there is a noticable difference.
I've been driving around with my vtc disconnected for a while as I have really annoying cam gear chatter.
Although mine is na so it could be more noticable than on a tt?

Just get a second hand set that dont leak, but they will leak and or rattle soon enough, if you are keeping the car for a while consider bighting the bullet and getting new ones.

About $370AU x 2 from the US, CZP might match the price, he is $420US x 2, but then he will ream you on freight because he wont be getting the margin he gets in the reco BDE ones.

Some BDE's have failed recently, have not really heard any updates whats happening with them, but they will cost you $475US + $150US core charge, thats $625US or $590AU plus freight, or $150 extra for new ones if you dont send cores.

    Tough call.

Maybe give Z1MotorSports a go if you decide to go new.

Thanks for your help, appreicate it. Would rather just buy new OEM ones then reco. Where did you find the $370 each price from? I cant seem to find them under $400 each.

    Cheers,

I based it on the 07/89 to 06/93 part number 13025-45V15 that suits NA amd TT.

I use Courtesy Parts as a yard stick.

If you slip the above part number into the search box, you get this.

$390.66 US and with current exchange rate thats $366AU each today.

CZP will probably boost freight if you ask them to match price, can only ask.

CZP are usualy slightly better than Courtesy or within a few dollars but I think in this case they have inflated the price to match margin with the BDE reco product.

But Z1Motorsports might be easier to get along with.

Z1 sell used as well as new, they are decent enough to also outline the pit falls of second hand ones.

I would contact both Z1 and CZP, who has the best price landed in Australia ?
