just curious to know, what were people looking at getting while looking for a car before the zed came and cought your eye. for example i was looking for an s15 but then saw the zed i have now and was hooked.... + the s15 was way too expensive for me anyway :p

As much as they are hated I've always liked MkIV supras. But alas a little too expensive, and nothing compared to the mighty ZED

But just not a pinch on the Zed, so forget it now... :zlove:

Besides that, from my past experience with rotaries, the engines are just too weak especially when you're pushing heaps of boost through them. Just don't last as long as the VG30

Ever since I was a (relatively) young lad, I had always liked the idea and looks of the original Zeds (1600 Fairlady and 240Z). Later in life (not like you lucky young buggers of today) I found myself in a position to buy a car for ME, personally, rather than a family hack.

I was seriously looking at a Skyline (R33/34), but my research showed that they had a weak point . . . the CV-joints, all four of them! This was enough to get me to consider Supra's, but I didn't like their looks. The Soarer/Lexus SC400 was next on the list, either in V8 form or 2L turbo, but they looked too big (boats?). Never liked the "roundy-roundy" motors (rotaries, even though I liked the shape of the various RX7's) because of the perceived expense of maintaining the engine (is this a similar misconception to the expense of maintaining a Zed?). . . some of the RX7's models also seemed to to me to be fairly fragile!

All this because I thought the 300ZX was too expensive (ie., out of my price-range!).

Then my son (Baroo) bought a Zed (a Z31, then, later a Z32) for what I thought was a very reasonable price, so I started looking for one for myself. Looked at several Z31's, but could never find a comfortable seating position.
The wife saw a Z32 ('90 Aus-spec) in the local paper, I went and had a look at it, fell in love, and bought it! Have NEVER regretted it!

Also looked at the 200SX (new) but thought it was a bit of a lightweight (literally) and kept looking for something better. The 350Z was also in contention, but I decided my (then) Magna had a better seating configuration.

When I realised how relatively cheap the 300ZX was, the 300ZX became King!

    True...

But they are a hell of a lot cheaper to rebuild, and a lot easier to get BIG power from.

Still, I got a Z... not a RX7 so why am I defending them

Well, my car preference was originally a commodore   (shutup im over that phase), i changed my mid after basic driver training where i drove an turbo mr2, that was cool so i wanted one for ages, eventually one day i saw a 300zx on the street and i thought to myslef 'iwonder how much they cost?' and i checked that night oin carsales, when i relised i could afford one, i fell in love :zlove:, very breifly looked at alternatives such as 180 or skyline (disacarded quite quickly), but yeah, also liked supras (the latest model mark V is it?) but they were too expensive and performed equal or worse than teh mighty 300

Back when I was in the wannabe drifter stage I wanted a 180. Then wanted a pimp car so was thinking a mid 90's Audi A4 or a Honda Accord. Never realised how cheap the 300's had become so when a friend was selling one I went to check it out. Didn't buy that car but a month later I bought mine.

The only car I'd consider would be a later model TT or possibly an R33 but it'd have to be a GTR. Until I get a better job and get off my P's, I'll be sticking with the NA.

Would have bought an R32 GTR but price and a certain article in HPI convinced me the Zed was the way to go.

In retrospect though I should have kept my 260z and done a GTR engine swap. I reckon I'd still be $1000s in front...

    Hmm, long list time...

At first I wanted a the late '80's Supra, the one with the 7M in it, too hard to find a good one :(
Then 180SX, too expensive for what you got :(
Then a skyline, same as above :(
Then a MR2, kinda expensive at the time :(
Then Celica GT4 same as above :(
Then a soarer, kinda boring and nearly impossible to get a manaul :(
Then a series 5 RX7, first one I drove had a busted apex seal and dodgy secondaries, that put me off pretty quick not too mention the orange dials :(
Then the Porsche 928, couldn't get one for a decent price without 250000 k's on it :(
    Then a Porsche 944, same again :(

Then I found my Z :zlove:

But 6 days after I got it one of my mates found a 944 in really good nick at the auctions and it was expecting to go for around $6K :( Sure the Z is cool, but it'd be nice to say you own a Porsche when your 19

An S15 is the best alternative I had, but loved the Z's too much!!!:zlove: Thought about buying an S15 again recently, but dismissed it in the end for the same reasons I initially got the Z. I do wish they still made something more like the Z32 than the Z33. I don't mind them, but it's kind of missing something (apart from the turbos) that the Z32 has.
If I were to replace the Z now (not planning on) I'd probably get an AMG or M3 etc amongst other things.
