My car is running on 3 cylinders at the moment, as my other topic.

One test I carried out is to install an injector test light that I borrowed from the mechanic who cleaned the injectors.

Installed in the place of an injector the light flashes each time the injector should click and inject fuel.

When turning the cam position sensor by hand the light would some times flash brightly and sometimes give just the weekest of flickers. It did this on number one and two cylinders.

I believe that number two cylinder is firing whilst number 1 is missing...

I did not run the engine with the test light attached as it was getting to late and did not want to bug the neighbors...

I thought that this indicated an earth fault so spent a lot of time checking the main earth strap connections from the battery. Also measured the earth resistance between the earth pins on the ecu and the floor of the car and seamed to be well earthed.

    Can anyone explain this behaviour?

    Thanks.

For anyone interested, I retested tonight with engine running and the light displayed a consistent flash to my eye. Brightens significantly when craacking the throtle and reving.

Cranking the cam position sensor by hand and the flash was much weaker, so I assume that the behaviour is normal.
