Hi all, am in a bit of dilemma. Just recently bought a '91 zed but didn't know bout this forum until after I bought the car. Am now alittle disappionted with what I bought, and am thinking of selling it and buying a new one that I've seen on this site. I bought my zed from a dealer for just over 9 grand and is in fairly good condition, except someone wear and tear as expected. Am very disappointed with the power and at the moment it is leaking power steering fluid. Am thinking of fixing it and getting the engine checked out to see if the power level can be increase, but I am not sure how much that is going to cost and if it would be easier just to sell the car and buy one for bout $15k. So at the moment I could say that I got $5-$6k to spend to get the car in good condition.
Does anyone think I can get the car into top condition for $5-$6k??????? I will try and post some photos of the car soon.

    is it TT?

    Is it TT?

If you got a TT for 9 grand, get a quote for "fixing" as that's a bargain.

If it's NA auto, then sell and get a TT manual (my pref) as if you're really after power, you are not going to get it from the NA Auto.

if you bought the car for 9000 and you are going to spend 5 on it,that totals 14000,with the resale at the moment ,i dont think you will get it back !! :(

DanZeds is a perfectly good example of a nice clean looking ,fairly stock zed for $9000 :)
ZWEETTS is also a great example, but at 17000,i think he would be very lucky to sell it anywhere near that price in the current market

As far as spending 15000 ,i havent seen too many sell for that much in all the time i have been here
good luck with your decisions :)

How long ago did you buy it? oil leaks should be fixed for the roadworthy... if you think that they gave you a bad deal then take it back to the dealer and ask for it to be fixed... it's worth a shot. Also, shouldn't the dealer provide you with some sort of compulsary warranty?

It really sounds like you've bought a fairly typical car.... don't just give up :)
Go over all the usual things like checking ECU errors, injector connectors, and test for boost leaks, you might be pleasantly surprised. A leaking pump isn't the end of the world.

it all depends on your deffinition of 'top condition', realistically id say its probably worth selling and buying one for abuot 15k with all preventative maintanace done as well as a few upgrades. I bought mine for $11500, so far spend $2000+ on preventative maintanace and repairs (thats 100k service done myself (with chrispy) ($1000) andits going into gearbox shop tommorow ($1250)), still gotta re-gas air con(~$200?), get a new driveshaft (~$650) and chage all auxilary fluids (~$400) and that before i start upgrading (suspension:$1500-2000, retrim:$2000-$2500, plenum pull, $1400) so total before its in what i would define as 'top notch' for me is around $20k  if you buy a car with most of0 that already done itll prob be around $15000, so yeah...your call :zlove:

    i had a similar prediciment

i had the choice to sell the car for 3-4k. i paid 11k, or spend 8k on a rebuild.
i chose the later option. it wasn't really a choice.. it helped further my obsession

$5-$6k sounds like a fair bit, but may not go as far as you think. I mean, it should get the car to a decent running standard, but not anything amazing. Once you include plenum pull, 100k service, replacing worn bushings and suspension parts, may take a fair chunk away. If it's dropping a cylinder or stuffed turbo seals, then you're up for much more...

Having said that, you will then have a car that you know about the (recent) mechanical history. Have it inspected by someone in your area who knows about the cars and take it from there. It could be just in need of a decent tune and fixing boost leaks (if it's TT).

Good luck and don't give up on her yet! :zlove:
