I think its a great idea

Do it properly and get before and after dyno figures done and aim for low and midrange power.
We hear back from you when you got it sorted out properly....bye

If I'm not mistaken, kazam has had a "shot" at>>

Jedi, Zisluv and me, all for giving some thoughtful opinions on a very questionable theory, that he put forward for comment.
So take your VTD, and shove it!:p:LOL:

If a thermostat is going to control your "flap", it will need to "read">

the intake air temperature. How will it do this without being in contact with that air? If it is in contact with the intake air, it will have to be in the air-stream, therefore it will be interfering with the airflow, therefore creating turbulence.
BTW, I did not suggest that you were VTD'ing the posts, but I am prepared to change my mind.

I quote "so take your VTD and shove it"

Thermostats are usually a thin piece of wire, ic's are a mass of interconnected ducts..which one do you think presents the greater restriction to air flow?

Thermocouples are "thin bits of wire". Thermostats are not.

If you read my post properly, you would have seen that I was replying to my own post (immediately before the "shove it" post}, not to yours. Sorry if you misunderstood that.:embarrassed:

that's a thermocouple your are thinking of.

a good intercooler only presents a 2-3psi drop and my gut feeling is that the cooling advantage even at vacuum would increase the air charge density and outweights the option of bypassing the intercooler.

    Unless ....

Try and merge the NA and TT piping setup and have 2 flap valves such that the air intake goes from the filter to both the turbo and throttle bodies (need one valve there) and then the pipe from the intercooler to the throttle body (need another valve there also where it joined the super short bypass pipe.

Some lateral thinking at last....maybe I could bypass the turbo and

the intercooler. It could be NA until boost comes on and then the air is diverted through the turbo and intercooler.

If you are that concerned about fuel use then why not buy a non turbo.

If the fuel is really an issue and you can some how manage to drive without boosting it (hard to resist that temptation) then you have to ask yourself why you really have a twin turbo for.
300ZX's are not the cheapest car to run, fuel, tyres, services are all expensive esp. so for a twin turbo. If you want to save costs then either buy a second car, drive your car very gently or just buy a non turbo.
I really question the proposed benefits of what you are planning weighed against the time, money, effort, added complexity and weight it would add to an already very complex machine.
No doubt any work or servicing would be made more difficult (and more expensive if performed by a mechanic).
The bypass itself could potential create additional restriction and turbulence. There is also a very high chance it could causing overheating on hot days, increasing the risk of mechanical failure or PTU failure (unless you change that to).

Not really sure it sounds worth it to me.
    .
I know there is a lot of fuel to be saved when driving a twin turbo 300ZX sedately off boost but I am not convinced there would be a huge difference between two Zeds driven off boost, one with intercoolers and one without.

Maybe you should drive off boost and calculate your fuel consumption then compare it to an NA driven the same, not exactly apples to apples but will give an idea of how much just the turbo architecture itself affects economy. I would be interested in the results.

The VTD cretin is obviously some small-minded person >>>

    >>> with a dislike of words like 'humbug', 'shove it', 'arse', and 'chilidog'. Quite simple really ... Takes all types  Maybe WYKKED will send the person(s) a 'please explain' PM?

BTW: Chili is only being constructive, he's got a wealth of knowledge gained over his looooong years! If no-one points out the flaws in yr thinking you'll get nowhere & waste time going there.

David, where in QLD are you mate? If in SEQ, how about coming cruiZing tomorra?

I guess Jedi77's banal comments at the beginning got to me....

I didnt mean to offend its just that knockers really shit me off. I appreciate I have much to learn about the Zed but I do whatever has to be done to the Zed myself. I don't pay a mechanic some exhorbitant amount and then claim credit for having modified my ride. Necessity is the mother of invention and all that. Cheers for the invite, cant make it this weekend but hope to go on a run with you guys soon.

Fuels not a problem Titan and I'd rather drive a Hyundai than an NA...

no offence to the NA crowd but hey, your pushing shit uphill with a pointy stick to try and get the same gut wrenching grunt as a TT. As to the TTs complexity, well as far as I'm concerned, its not that complex and this is why I love them(except for that darned HICAS)

yeah that would be a better way of going

about it. this way you also don't have issues with the butterflys not being able to hold boost (ie air leaking around the intercoolers not through).

although, would also need butterflys at the other end to stop compressed air from the turbos being pushed out through the air intake. these would have to be airtight. also issues with power 'holes' as it switches path. certainly wouldn't make for the smoothest torque curve.

in theory it sounds ok, but in practice it certainly wouldn't be worth the effort. like they say, keep it simple stupid.

Back in the day my NA drove quite nice

even up 'steep' hills. (mind you it needed some mods before it actually could speed up quickly while doing it).

I have a TT so I am not offended.

If you want the performance of a TT you have to deal with the fuel economy associated with it, that is just life.
I think you would be lucky to make any significant savings with your idea.
I wasn't going on about the complexity of the Zed, I was saying you will increase the complexity as well as reducing room and airflow in the engine bay.

I have a question, if you decided to boost around for a bit because. well it is just so much fun, then go back to just cruising, how long will it take to switch back to bypassing the intercoolers? The turbo's remain rather warm for some time after (reaching 900 degree's will do that). This will heat up the air passing through them and will no longer be called down at all. How exactly does that increase efficiency?

I think remapping the ECU would have a far greater affect on fuel efficenty and be much cheaper and easier.

A final note, what Hyundai would you rather be driving than an NA Zed???

Actually I'd rather eat razorblades than drive a Hyundai..

as to your question check the previous post "Some lateral thinking at last" I think would bypass the turbo and the intercooler in the end...how is still the big question
