Im painting them Red using vht and just wondering a few things. 1. how hard is it too take the calipers off and wat is needed? 2. i have degreaser and sand paper is that all the prepping i need? 3. should i put like a coat of clear or protection over the paint once done. thanks.
Can't shed any light about how easy it is to take calipers off as I opted for the easier option of buying a full spare set of calipers and taking my time to paint them instead, and will be putting them on in a few weeks when I get new rotors & pads. But follow the articles as it has been done to death. Key points: - Heaps of degreaser to take all the crap off. When you think you've degreased enough, do them once more. - As others mentioned, putting some grease on the Nissan lettering works wonders. - As for painting like others have said, lots of thin coats. I did 8 or so light coats of black. - Then a fortnight later I did part 2 of the Nissan Lettering solution: I was struggling to get even pressure from the sand paper, so popped down to bunnings and bought a small flat file. And it does the job great! - Lastly, did 5 coats of clear and waited another fortnight to harden (with some assistance with an oven). End result...
Most people just chuck some newspaper up... and sand off the Nissan before throwing on the clear Those're from when I did mine... took one afternoon and didn't even use caliper paint, still looks the same today as the day I did it.
i dont have the nissan symbol on my front ones. the previouse owners had it angle grinded off to fit wierd rims on. but the wheels i have now probably wouldnt of fit either with out it being grinded
you can buy kits which contain caliper cleaner, caliper prep, rust preventative paint, top coat, gloves and brushes. http://ppcco.com.au/
1. taking the calipers off isn't hard. the annoying part is cleaning up the brake fluid once you disconnect the lines and having to bleed your brake system when you reinstall the calipers. if you're just painting the stock calipers and want to save some time, leaving them on the car and wrapping newspaper around everything else is perfectly acceptable as long as you take your time to do even layers. don't rush it else it will drip and leave run marks. 2. degrease and sandpaper is fine. 3. don't bother with clear coat on red, clear doesn't stick well to red and it will just peel. ever seen factory EVO brembos after they've been well used? faded to shit and all the clear is gone. here's painted brembos without clear: http://www.aus300zx.com/forum/showthread.php?t=291290. VHT red caliper paint, plenty of shine and doesn't fade unless you cook the paint somehow. i did a touchup on some faded rears after overheating them. came out well. long story on how they became like that. i won't bore you with the story.
