    hey guys,

Hopefully some one will be able to help me, as i have installed a remote start system to my car and as it is a manual TT i need to find the neutral switch cable in the car cabin to hook it up so i cant start in gear (its scared me already.. i gotta fix abit of the fence.. no dmg to car but... ) i have a aftermarket switching unit but its gunna b very difficult to attach it due to the dust boots and contour of the dash.

Also how can i tell if the switch is working, as ive read on other posts and the tech page u need to use the clutch to start the car but in mine i dont think i do as i can start the car in neutral without the clutch depressed.

hopefully someone can help me out here cause i want this to work but i also want the safety of knowing my car wont start if i have a mind slip and leave the car in gear to start into something or someone, which is prob why they not meant to be hooked up..

anyways thanks in advance for any posts helping me out :)

Best bet is to follow it up from the gbox, it joins up with the loom near the starter and if my memery serves me, its a yellow wire.

Althoug im sure someone can tell you an easier way.

Bumpy bump... All I need to know now is how to tell if the switch is functional guys... Found where it goes into ecu but need to know how to tell if it's gunna work for me.. Cause I can't tell a difference in the idle when I place the car in first or any gear...

i know its a strange request guys but i am only using it for when i go to use the remote start system on my zed... i dont want it running away into things on a flat if i accidently leave it in gear... i aint dumb enuff to leave it out of gear on a hill... thats asking for trouble... but where i park most of the time its flat.. a car with no handbrake and in neutral wouldnt move where i park... and it isnt for all the time use.. just want it to b a safer system.. instead of being able to start in gear as it can now.. :(

so if i leave it in gear it doesnt start moving at the press of a button..

and adding to the argument there.. ive always left my car in neutral if its a manual... unles on a hill... u cant get in trouble for it

To answer your question (and not set you adrift in an ocean of legalities) the following pic shows the neutral switch on the manual gearbox. To be safe I'd unplug it and check it's operation with a multimeter (continuity check) in gear and in neutral (with the car switched off of course as you will have to get under it to accessthe plug). If it checks out ok then you can splice the wires of your alarm into it whilst you have access to it. Good luck!

The Neutral switch can be seen in the following diagram connected to the ECCS unit (ECU) on pin 44.

Point 10 on that drawing also goes to the PSCU (Power Steering Control Unit), as shown on the following diagram. Note this is only valid for M/T vehicles (In A/T vehicles it comes from the A/T inhibitor selector and Starter relay):

    ok guys update time,

ive found the cable at the ecu but am yet to test it from under the car at the gearbox itself. It doesnt seem to be providing the ground needed for the remote starter to activate so can anyone confirm that i am getting this right. The neutral switch grounds when in neutral and that ground is what tells the ecu that it is in neutral. Also i dont think it makes a difference but it is a blitz ecu. hopefully the switch still works, otherwise ill just have to cann the whole remote starter thing cause i dont want it starting in gear. (i really wanna get it going as it does the turbo timer thru the remote start section of the alarm and if i can have that working atleast it saves me having to spend money somewhere else on one.

    Thanks guys :zlove:

    Grab a multimeter,
    disconnect the ECU,
put it to ohms (or continuity),
put one end to a know good earth point (ECU plug, pin 60 would do),
put the other end to ECU plug pin 44,

and when the car is in neutral you should get 0 ohms (or continuity). If not, then the switch is stuffed.

wait so if its saying 0 ohms in neutral, then it provides a ground when in gear right? or is it grounding out of gear??

sorry the whole ohms thing still gets me all confused.. and i work in a car audio shop.. odd huh

It should be grounding (0 or greater ohms) when in neutral, and open circuit ('OL') when in gear. If the multimeter reading does not change whether in gear or not, then the switch is not working.

get a test light and test the wire... put the clamp on constant and than earth..
im an installer too and i dont like using a multimeter.

use the test light.. see if it gives a negative/positive/nothing when it is in or our of gear.
if your getting no change either way than like mentioned above its screwed.

It should say 0 or less than 2 ohms (not "0 or greater") if in neutral. When you put it in gear, it should say OL or 320 or flash or deflect to the full scale of the meter (called "full deflection").

Anyone who has been following this thread will know what a bloody mess it was.:mad::mad:
Thank you to all those who partook on this adventure-ride of bullshit and mayhem.
I've now cleaned this thread up so the actual answer to the question is visible, instead of being buried under 58 posts of garbage.
Yes folks, 58 out of 72 posts were off topic.
You should all get infractions for such behaviour in the Technical section.

Rest assured, next time you will.

Now, the question has been answered, so, if you feel like adding something to the discussion that is on topic go right ahead.
If you wander I'm going to slap your chops with an infraction.
