1. The problem 2. How to explain it! Okay so I will admit I have no Idea how to explain this, so I will start off with a scenario. My apologies in advance if my typing is a little off, im using my phone to type as im away from home. So i was driving the other day when i noticed something peculiar about my car. Doing 70 in 5th i moved into a 100 zone, i put my foot down and started the meek acceleration to 100. After about two seconds, my rev started to climb as if it wasn't in gear and i was forced to take my foot off the accelerator. after numerous tests i have concluded that this occurs in gears 3-5, and results in my car smelling like... something? Its not a prevalent odour however i believe if i tested more then it would be quite obvious. At the moment ita very subtle. I cant quite pick it. I don't think its clutch, its more of a metallic smell i guess? Im rather confused. I didn't even think something like this was possible. Its as if the car gradually slips out of gear as i put the gear under more stress. currently the car is drivable however, i can see this rendering it the opposite, with the added problem that im 150kms or so from home, in Queenscliff. I don't really know how else to describe rather that imagine doing the speeds mentioned previously and slowly pushing the clutch in. That's what it feels like. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated as im rather confused. :/
You are putting too much load on a worn clutch. Downshift to 4th or 3rd before accelerating from 70km. Or get a new clutch, it's slipping.
Clutch is slipping, i had the same with my car and i still drove it for 6 months with a slipping clutch.
Ahh. I guessed so but I wasnt sure if the clutch was definitely it. Well, thanks for the reply! Around how much is a new clutch? Just so I know what Im in for
Clutches are cheap, paying to install one is not. If paying a shop to source and install a clutch, expect up to $1500.
Cheap clutches are cheap. Like F1 clutches... Yeah, 4-6hrs for a good workshop to change a clutch. So about $400-$600 labour. Good single plate clutch will set you back about $700. Cheap single plate clutch will set you back about $350 A lot of people will rave about cheapies, good bang for buck, holds power well, but there's also a lot of negetive reviews about premeture failure that coupled with the hassle of gearbox removal, put me off.
I was worried about this also, so went the stage 4. Seems to hold Benny's power ok tho, but he was warned and had the clamp load increased AFAIK
Take it down to Bryan in Geelong...he will be able to help you out with installing the clutch and if your lucky he might has a clutch for you aswell...good luck. Abraham
Ahhh well well. Such an expensive conundrum. Im wondering whether to just get a decent clutch off the bat, but Im just your typical broke uni student so I just think it will take too long for me to save the money to pay for it before it damages more than just the clutch. How can i get into touch with Bryan? Might be worth just giving him a call to see what Im in for ;D Thanks a lot for all of your help. I appreciate it.
