I fitted two hi speed fans to the rear of my OEM IC's

    It was a lot of work but the job is not completely finished yet. The fans draw about 15 amps a piece and make a hell of a racket but without the extra mods the fans dropped half a second off my 0 - 100 which used to be 6 secs.
    The whole idea of the fans is for the ocassional drag racing and when I eventually get back to the track I will have them come on automatically when the cars speed is low.

    I am also going to modify the electrics so they will run half speed. However to really get the benefit out of them I will be putting in a relay to drop the alternator off line so your not taking from "Peter to pay Paul" so to speak and yes I will be adding the water spray when I get the battery into the boot!

    Long term project but its far cheaper than new IC's. The only drawback is you have to get rid of the carbon cannister and then modify the radiator overflow tank on the LH side.

    but i doubt fans would supply any added cooling benifit while the car was moving.

    I mean what sorta speed would the fans be sucking air through the ic's? Perhaps you just got a better start, or maybe one of many, many variables affected your 0-100 time. Maybe it was downhill :LOL: ??

    Whats the deal anyhow with this fad of fitting fans behind IC's? Personally I'm on the sceptical side of the fence.

    If your fans are creating a half sec increase in 0-100 time the water spray should bring you to about a 3second pass.

    But then I could be wrong...can someone do before and after tests on the dyno and bring some proof. Otherwise this can turn into a SMIC vs FMIC debate all over again.

    might help at low speed MIGHT but at high speed

    I reckon your probably stuffing up the airflow through the fans resistance. While drag racing your cars average speed is probably about 120 kph, with the finishing speed about 180..(maybe..) I doubt if your fans can push air that fast so the reality is that the fans are being spun by the cars airspeed (yes I know it doesnt really fly.....) and actually creating drag, slowing down the airflow over the IC's.

    not wanting to get picky, but I'm sure theres someone who can give a coeficient of airspeed/flow howmuchheattaken away type thing...but why bother.

    When I first got my Z I would use the same bit of road to do my 0-100 tests

    and I was consistently getting 7 seconds while everyone said I should be at 5 1/2. I then pulled the engine and did it up and on the same bit ot of road with basically the same ambient conditions I got her down to 6 seconds. :thumbsup:
    Now the next biggest and best mod to do was bigger IC's but I wasnt wanting to spend that sort of money. All the bigger IC is going to give you is better cooling of the charge.Is that not correct?:unsure:
    Another way is to increase the cooling and that was by fans.
    The flow through those OEM IC's is dismal at the best of times and when I was experimenting the flow increase wasnt as good as I had expected but nevertheless on the same bit of road and the same ambient conditios I pulled the time down by 1/2 a sec.:LOL:
    What will I get with water spray and dropping the alternator off line...I dont know but if I can get another 1/2 sec I would be happy.;)

    3 secs is a bit fancyful but if I came back with a 1 sec decrease in my time then goodoh!!

    And yes I will put it to the test on a dyno the next time we have a dino day.:cool:

    Well that finally asnwered my question from my own thread when I asked the question.

    There is obviously a lot of heat trapped in that cavity inside the bumper bar, and the fans would be a big help at low road speeds (which is what I thought).

    Afterall, the average road speed on a trip into town can often be under 40kmph.

    I would be nice to have "cool" intercoolers ready for when the foot drops heavy onto the accelerator pedal.

    I don't believe that there is a good path for air to leave the intercooler area either, and it stands to reason air can only get in as fast as air can get out anyway.

    I had absolutely no improvement on 1/4 mile time

    after fitting much larger side mount intercoolers and that was running at 17psi before and after. IMO its a nice upgrade to make it safer for longer high speed running (track days etc) but makes little or no difference for a single run when heat soak has not taken hold.

    My point exactly JT. Before I would do a 0-100 I would switch the fans

    on and wait for 30 secs in order to cool the IC's down. Whereas no matter how big your IC's are if there is no flow through them then its only a matter of time before they are heat soaked and basically useless until you get the speed up. ;)

    Thats why I will eventually wire them in to run at certain times during a track day ie when the speed is low then the fans are on.:LOL:
