How short is a short shift supposed to be? I bought one off ebay ages ago and only got around to fitting it this weekend. After a lot of dicking around and skinned knuckles from undoing blind nuts I realised my stock shifter was the same bloody size as the one sent to me!

It was a private sale so I cant track the guy down now so....

    How long is yours?

(hmmm... now thats an open ended question isnt it? )

A short shifter is a shorter throw not a shorter stick......

the pivot point is moved up the stick in order to change the fulcrum point thereby shortening the throw (distance travelled to change gears) considerably.

You may just have a modified standard one, look to see how far the the top part of the shifter post protrudes out of the pivot section, and if it's shorter than your old stock one, then you've definately got a short throw shifter.

OR see if the bottom section is longer than your old one to confirm the short throw capability.

Bummer... so the height will be the same then? I placed the mount of the new one on the bracket of the old and they both stood at the same height. I guess the difference may have been under the mount point as I could see under there.

Ive got to book my car in with UAS for a new clutch and steering rack so I might get them to put the shifter on for me. Or at least confirm if it is what it was meant to be.

the height of the gear stick will be lower if you modify an existing

gear stick doing it using the short shifter mod. don't know about buying a kit though.

if you want it shorter...cut it

with a hacksaw and re tap the end of it...it's pretty stubby anyway so maybe i misread the post...yeah...little vague today...

cutting it doesn't reduce the throw, it just makes it look lower.
