How hard would it be to replace turbos without removing the engine?

I know you can remove the heads without removing the engine, And I know its possible to unbolt the dump pipes. And lets face it you have to unbolt the exhaust from the head to remove the head. I don't want to remove the heads but I'm sure with the plenum removed it wouldn't be that difficult would it??:D

I believe you will need special tools ie cut down spanners and many hours of toil :(

    Technically I suppose it's possible...

But it is sooooo much easier to pull the engine. I removed the heads with the engine in the car and never again.:(

depends how masochistic you are !!

I beleive it is possible, easier if you have the hands of a 5 year old. I also have doubts about how well you can put the turbos back on with it in the car.

I recon you should do it and let us all know how you went!

you obviously missed my post from last week :)

It's a pain in the ass. I've so far removed the passenger side turbo only, I'll be attacking the drivers side next week. I needed to cut a spanner and weld it at 90 degrees to get 1 nut off. Apparently if you remove the exhaust manifold with the turbo on the drivers side it's easier, but that came from someone in the US so may not be applicable here. Still, I'd rather be doing this than pulling the engine, I've done that once and swore I'd never do it again :)

Go the engine pull! Took me only 6hrs!!!

The engine is not as hard to pull as 1st imagened & with the car in the air, it took me only 6hrs to pull & 7hrs to put back in & turn the key. All was done with having to swing a 100kg auto around under a car that was on stands!
Anyway as the guys were saying, it is possible to pull the turbos off in the car but by the time you have made the special tools & stuffed around in those tight spots you might as well have pulled the engine.
You also get all the benefits of checking over the entire engine while out & replacing/removing anything that might be suspect or not needed. i.e EGR, vacuum hoses, turbo water hoses & plenum hoses.

    Good luck!

p.s if you pull the engine do what i did & label everything before pulling off. Makes the whole process less of a headache

i would love to pull the engine

but it sounds a bit too scary at the moment.... would probably make it easier to install my manual tranny when i get it??? hmmm.... what 'work' can you do to your turbos while they are out?

Honestly?!!! The best thing would be to toss them in the bin!!!

Dont bother with the puny little snails. They are one of the most breathless snails that nissan ever bothered with. They are smaller than whats on a CA!
Get the specs of those turbos that were in that group buy recently & get yourself a pair!
GT25's are also good but for the price that those guys paid, go the 28's!

Yes also do the manual swap with the engine out as the auto will have to be pulled to get the engine out anyway.

I suppose it all depends if u have the room and the crane

to do the engine pull. I'm working in my back yard at the moment and don't have enough height in my tiny shed to hang a chain block or anything. Apart from that I'm sick to death of removing my gearbox :)

Yeh but we want to make the job as easy as...

possible. You need a big crane also to be able to pull both the engine & box. Roughly 300kg's swinging from a crane:( not over my car!!!

    I've got the same problem

my turbo is nearly gone cos smoke keep coming out when I'm waiting in front of traffic light. So...can anyone give me some suggestions 1.Should I re-build the turbo 2.Should I get another (better) one instead 3.What's the difference (price) between I do the whole thing by myself and just leave it with mechanic. 4. Which mechanic in ACT is trustable?
    Thanks guys

    Would rather not remove engine
