How do you use a grease gun?

    I know it's a silly question, but I stuff it every time.Some years ago purchased a grease gun, don't think I got any greasing done because I broke the part that connects to the grease nipple.Now I have adjustable upper control arms fitted with grease nipples fitted. So I have purchased another connector for the grease gun and f**ed it again.So my question is, how do you connect it onto the nipple and how do you get it off successfully?Any help appreciated.8-}

    Correct attachment to the nipple

    ... is essential for 'fluid' transfer.The ball-valve must be pushed onto the nipple securely before pumping the gun. Grease will flow into the joint, and when full, excess grease will be excreted around the rubber boot.

    Errr...dont pump untill....>>>>>

    ....the grease comes out around the rubber boot, this breaks the seal, and eventually lets in grit. It is an assumption of most DIY's that the more grease the better, when actually opposite is usually the case. For an upper controll arm ball joint, two pumps, on high volume, would be sufficient. The grease gun nozzle must be square to the grease nipple for it to work. This is the problem most people have, ie the grease coming out between the nipple and the nozzle. If necessary get a flexible extension, to make the job easier. GT

    I have a flexible hose and have tried to put

    the nozzle square to teh nipple but I still can not push it on. And I push really hard.Is it possible to have the wrong size nozzle for the nipple?

    As far as i know

    1 size fits all....Should jsut be a case of pushing the hose over the nipple and pumping away.....CheersAnthony

    You should be able

    to loosen the jaws on the connector. If you have a close look at the end where it goes onto the nipple you will see 2 small jaws. these are spring loaded so when you push the connetor onto the nipple they come aprt as you push it on abd then spring back into the necked down part of the nipple. the body of the connector is usually made in 2 parts that are screwed together. if you unscrew them a bit it will make it easier to push the connector onto the nipple. you will probably have to tighten them back up once you have it on and then loosen them again to get it off the nipple. When I say tighten I only mean finger tight. Also don't loosen them too far or the connector will come apart.
    Hope you can understand what I'm saying here.
    if you get really stuck I could take some pics of what I mean.
    There are two sorts of grease nipple that I know of but the other one is a large industrial type which I have never seen on a car.regards
