fire blankets are designed not to burn so you can throw it on a flame and it will snuff out the fire by cutting off the air....

a sheet like this will not stop a fire in any way as there is
    a) still a air gap between the engine and the cover
    b) air coming in from all sides of the engine
    and so on...

it will how ever provent the heat radiating onto the bonnet that, over many years, can cause the paint to crack off from hot-cold-hot-cold-hot-cold.... also incase the engine ever did run hot or boiling oil was flowing onto the bonnet on the underside thatn you can burn yourself from touching it unknowningly... remember engineers design for more than just mechanical reasons... they design agains lawsuits too...

the insulation will never and was never designed to provet or stop fire... only to help silence then noise of the engine and provent the bonnet getting hot...

and andy... your a bad influence so i convinced k-zed to put all my infractions onto you from now on.

I'm sure that mostly it doesn't matter whether the car has the insulator or not... it's a bit like not having the badge in the middle of the steering wheel / missing the screw covers from the center console / having holes in the carpet / torn filthy seats / scratches all over the cargo area trims, etc or even the clear coat blowing off in the wind as you drive along - bothers some but clearly doesn't bother others - each to their own I guess :D
