High Idle - 1200rpm Even When Warm

    Hi all,

Just thought I'd post up a 'win' I had the past weekend.:)

I'd been having this slight issue with a hight idle the past month - sort of sporadic and not really a big problem, just damn annoying. Sometimes it would go away when the engine was warm and I had been driving a bit. The car would start fine and run fine, I'd take off to my destination, then when at the stop lights or arrived it would just sit there at high idle - around the 1200 rpm mark and would not go down to the normal 750 after being warmed up.

So, I had a look under the bonnet and thought at first it may have been the temp sensor connector on the upper alloy water hard pipe. Took it apart, cleaned it and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. Also gave it a little wiggle when the engine was running to see if it made a difference - sorta made it run better so I thought I'd fixed it. But no, few days later same thing!

So, I looked further and took the throttle position sensor (T.P.S.) connector apart to see if that was O.K. - guess what I found there: Yep, white crusty powdery stuff that was obviously interfering with the signal from the sensor. Mainly on the middle pin connector. Used electronic contact cleaner to clean the connector both male/female sides, placed it all back together and tested for the same high idle problem. Started the engine and almost immediately it went to the correct idle of around 750 rpm (I had used the car earlier so it was already warmish). WOW, win for me then.:D

Finished off the job by disconnecting the connector again and applying a small spray of 'silicon spray' on the connector pins and plug - retested and all good to go.

I do remember a while ago I had cleaned the engine bay as it was so dusty and I think that may have been the cause for the initial problem. As normally I place plastic bags over all the connectors, but that time I didn't.

    Happy Zedder again.

    Seeya.
