What's the better hicas system? Hydronic or electric? Which system weighs more? Which is more reliable? Any performance differences?
Electric - hence why it was used on later models - its lighter given no hydraulic fluid or hydraulic parts
Don't know that one offhand But the difference between Super HICAS (electric version from Late 1992+ on) and HICAS (pre 1993) in weight is about 6 1/2 kg - this includes the lines filled, the rear unit and the extra line reservoir It a rather minimalistic in weight savings
The two systems, whether it's the hydraulic or electric versions are known as the Super HICAS. The is no plain HICAS & Super HICAS. The electric version first appeared in September 1993. As the hydraulic system was now redundant, the NA Power Steering Pump, Reservoir & Steering Rack were used in TT's built from 09/93. The gear ratio on the NA rack is different than the earlier version TT rack, so the late 1993 model was advertised as having a faster steering ratio. The electric system would have to be considered more advanced as there are less components in the system.
All Z32's were fitted with "Super HICAS", hydraulic or electrical operation has nothing to do with the "Super HICAS" designation. The electric Super HICAS actuater came into use on JDM vehicles from 09/93. "HICAS" was an earlier version that was just not as super.
To East Coast Z's credit he is correct in relation to rack ratio, as of 09/93 when electrical Super HICAS actuators were fitted, lock to lock on TT's reduced to 2.4 turns. This information came from a combination of FAST part info and 93 work shop manual.
