HICAS problems

ok, well it has happened again so need to get to the bottom of it, what is happening is that my HICAS sensor is registering 180 degrees when driving straight causing the rear wheels to to turn in one direction when im going straight.

Mechanic has reset the value to zero when wheels are straight using conzult a few times but after a few weeks all of a sudden it will get stuck on 180 degrees again. As well as stuffing up the handling it's also causing the power steering fluid to boil over making a mess each time.

Any ideas that isn't just delete HICAS?

    Cheers

I don't understand this 180 deg thing(the HICAS only deflects your wheels approximately 4 deg, if I remember correctly).:confused:

As the Power Steering Res. holds the fluid for both steering boxes, how do you know that the HICAS is causing it to overflow(I also can't see how the system can overflow a properly filled Reserviour)?
My only guess would be that you have a faulty HICAS Soleniod which is not allowing the displaced fluid to return to the opposite side of the Steering Box.

Thanks for reply, by 180 degrees I mean HICAS is behaving as if wheel was on full lock. Reason I can tell it's the HICAS causing the overflow is that it is fine for a few weeks, then once it happens, at low speed the wheel lines up straight to go straight, then at high speed I have to hold the the steering wheel not straight in order to hold the car straight, so counter steering the HICAS, and then once this starts to happen the fluid starts to overflow after a little while.

    Hopefully that is clearer

If your rear wheels are deflecting to one side or the other when you are driving in a straight line, then it is clearly a HICAS Steering Sensor and/or your HICAS Soleniod which are not operating correctly. Do you have a non OEM Steering Wheel fitted? If so, have a check on the Sensor located under the hub, it "reads" a slotted wheel to determine when the steering is pointed straight ahead(check the Tech Section for more info on this component and it's operation).

Yes, I do have an aftermarket wheel, but I have had it for 4 years and there have only been problems recently. I have already taken the wheel off to have look and see if the bar that is attached to the boss kit to guide the sensor was still there and all seemed ok.

Could also give you my solenoid to check if you want before I bin it

Check the wires for the sensor, is one of them earthing or is the earth damaged or loose?

Thanks, may do that, can't believe it went again just after I left yours and we were talking about it.

If only it was a consistant problem, would be much easier to figure out.

This happened to me whilst I was on the freeway and it wasn't so bad when it was adding in more rear steering angle as it happened over a period of about 5 seconds but then it fixed itself abrubtly and had me heading towards the centre divider. Not much fun.

Check ST-73 for the steering self-diagnosis. May help you pinpoint the faulty solenoid/switch.

Personally I just killed the HICAS. Never looked back.

I have the solenoid that came off my car. Its yours for $50 plus post if you want it. It sounds like the solenoid if it is that intermittant.

Steering wheel angle sensor will be the problem. Change that out for a known good one. Also if you have been consistently boiling over the fluid, you will have to bleed the hicas rack as well or your steering will still wonder left or right a few degrees.
