    Dave Budden The Bizz!

Hi, I recently bought a L32 Twin turbo in rreally good condition!,it's a pretty genuine car & has had alot of money spent on it! (Wheels, tyres, paint job etc.),the engine has only done 135kms(It looks pretty genuine). The problem is when it idles a slight "Knocking noise can be herd".It performs really well but my mechanic mate has pointed out this noise & he could be a bearing noise, but he wasn't sure!,Do I need to worry or what? Help!
    Thankyou.

    Knock, tick or rattle?

If it's a tick, it's probably lifters, they often gum up and have too much clearance. Only real fix is to pull them out (huge job) and clean them or replace (friggen expensive).

If it's a knock it's likely to be bearing issues, hopefully not as a rebuild will be required.

If it's a rattle then probably the variable intake cam sprockets. Only fix is replacement.

Lifter tick - I've seen many that

were reduced dramatically with a good quality oil and oil filter change. 20W-50. If you've just bought it, no idea when the oil was last replaced ...

They can bleed down as Chrispy said. Give the new oil a good go with several cold/hot/cold engine temp cycles before you write-off the lifters.

    Chrispy,

If it's the lifters, would you rebuild anyway? I actually don't know the answer but am wondering given that half the engine is pulled to bits anyway to fix 'em.

    Cheers.

Rebuild the lifters or the motor?

It's not that much pulled apart. Need to remove the plenum, cam belt and everything in between.

Can be done in a day if you know what you are doing.

Sorry. Should've been clearer. Engine. I thought the process of pulling the lifters out was a bit more involved (never done it before) than a day's work.

It's practically a 100K service and a plenum pull combined.

If you haven't done both before I wouldn't expect to be able to do it in a day.

First 100K I did took me about 5 days :p

I'd be interested in being part of a whole engine rebuild down here in Victoria. I've been involved with a Holden 186 Red engine rebuild (for my '64 EH) but me thinks that a VG will be slightly more complicated......

Depends how quick you are but can be done in a day. Remove the plenum, take off cam covers and all belts off engine (including timing belt) then simply pull the cams out and you're there.

I'll be rebuilding my supra engine a couple of weeks. You're welcome to participate :)
It's not a VG but what better way to learn than the king of the Jap engines :D

Basically similar design (twin cam bucket and shim). Main difference being one's a V6 the other is a straight 6.

Yeah mate. Just give me a date and I'll try to cruise up again. Weekends are filling up though because of Christmas and Birthday crap. I know too many people with birthdays around the same time as Jesus...... Add to that the Christmas parties and you get the picture.

I feel your pain. My son's birthday is in December, then my mum's the following weekend and another somewhere in between.

The longest job is stripping cleaning and reassembling the 24 lifters, especially if they are gummed up or the check valve passes. I would suggest that you have a couple of spare lifters in case you find one or two that are past redemption
