my bro has an 89 300ZX TT suto (dark blue). nice car in nice condition. he had a problem the other day and i thought i would see what the guru's have to say to see if you can help us out in solving the dilemma last week while he was driving the cur jsut cut-out for no reason. he started it up and drove off and thought nothing of it. Well it has happened about 4 times since Let me first say its NOT the ptu as this was opened up 2 months ago to solve another problem. last night he told me about it. so i thought i would try to do some diagnostics. cleaned the AFM (using brake cleaner) as i do on my skyline and will see how he goes today. i suspected a loose clamp on an intercooler hose that is falling off or something but couldn't see anything at 10pm last night. anyone got any other suggestions?? i would love to plug it into conZult if there was a tech day around soon. cheers, Warren.
apart from the obvious... solution which would be to sell the 300ZX and buy an R32GTSt skyline!
How do you know that it isn't the PTU??..>> There may have been nothing wrong with it 2 months ago when it was opened but that doesn't mean that something isn't wrong with it now. Has he done an ECU check to see if there are any error codes? A loose hose would cause the car to run like crap, but it wouldn't just fix itself. Selling the car is not a solution.
Does anyone have a spare PTU??? Mr wazr32skyline is a mate of mine, so I'm wondering if it would be wise to swap the PTU from his brothers car with a known working one??? Cheers
Easy way courtesy of evZ (inside) But before you do that try wiggling the PTU and CAS connections. If they are loose/dirty that might be a place to start. Here's the ECU test courtesy of fellow member evZ (Evan) evZ ECU diagnostic check... all you need is a few bits of wire to do the test itself and get the code. The page also details how to set up a test button for ease of future use. You can do this later if desired... If you get no error codes, I'd be checking every electrical connector under the bonnet (particularly the PTU and CAS)
you're a legend... will wiggle every god damn plug i can see tonight and then do an ECU test on the weekend... this isn't the first electrical problem he has had either, with a broken wire in the loom somewhere setting him back $80 for a replacement loom and a weekend of my dad trying to put a loom in with the engine still in!
I think I've still got one.....>> I had two and one is definatley out on loan. If I remember I'll dig the other one out and bring it along tomorrow night.
I have a spare PTU,could o/night mail it if Wykked can't find his. It was working perfectly when I replaced it with series 2.
I can definitely bring one tomorrow >>> As I picked up my repaired loaner from Zcar91 on the weekend. JG said he had one of yours as well, so unless that is the definite loaner you mentioned, you might not have one lying around.
Could I please borrow it Mikey..... to diagnose warrens (wazr32skyline) brothers sick zed?? I'll be at the NDSOC meeting tommorow night so if its ok, I'll get it from you there? Cheers
No worries, so long as I get this one back >> The last loaner I lent out was never given back. I will be putting ID marks on it this time. See you tomorrow.
aren't they the same as in the skylines??? I know I had one from an R31, but don't know if it followed on.
No worries mikey..... I work with warren everyday, and trust him without a doubt. The markings are a good idea though, because if it is borrowed by someone else in the future, at least you wont get a dodgy unit back. Cheers
ECU diagnostic switch I just installed a test switch today, easy to do and it works beaut! Code 55 as expected, but a good mod for a 'rainy day' in Qld! I installed the switch in the plastic kick panel forward of the bonnet release.
thanks heaps... for all your help guys. will only need it over the weekend and can hopefully either point the finger or rule out the ptu all together. and as mark said i work with the little man (in fact if i reach over my head now i could almost punch him! ), so i ain't dodgy... Cheers, Warren.
