Hey Lads, just wondering for those racers out there, where to get an ADR cams approved helmet from, i cant seem to find one.

    Any web site links appreciated.

also when wearing a helmet does your head hit the roof in the Z. im 6ft and sit with the seat upright as possible and already its a tight fit.

    Here is some

    Online

Or Just pop into any Motorcycle shop.

You get what you pay for, around 250-350 should get you a good helmet.

Almost all helmets for sale in the bike shop will be adr approved even the dirt bike ones. I saw an online add for a motoctoss helmet yesterday for $119 Including googles. For what you are doing it would be fine.

I think motorcycle/vehicle crash helmets need AS/NZS1698 or Snell .....

approval. ADR only applies to bicycle helmets. I think ADR is fairly minimal whereas AS/NZS1698 or Snell has much more rigorous testing procedures.

    I have a list......>>

Of approved helmet standards at home. I'll post it tomorrow. As far as clearance goes, you will need about 2" between the top of your head and the roof as a minimum, but you might find the window frame section of the targa is your biggest problem. It always was for me.

    Dont forget......>>

To cover the headlights and driving lights. The cams regs state that all forward facing glass (except windscreens) must be fully covered with a transparent adhesive film that can be any color except red. Make sure the fire extinguisher is in a metal bracket and check the date on it. They are good for 6 years in a road car, but there are often cheap deals on year old stock. If you have any questions just ask, I'm a level 3 CAMS Certified Scrutineer.

    Some answers in here >>>

    Firstly, on the web try
    Revolution Racegear or
    Speedzone
There are Adelaide branches of both of these.
I would expect that both places should be able to supply everything you need. However, I think you might find that both places tend towards the more expensive helmets. I bought an HJC full-face helmet with AS1698 approval, cost about $250 - but IF I was ever to do Targa Tas, or other FIA regulated events, I would have to update to one of the Snell rated helmets, which I believe would start at around the $600 mark. An AS1698 approved helmet is perfectly CAMS acceptable for the sort of events you have indicated.
    HJC catalogue (pdf file)

I bought my helmet, bonnet pins, extinguisher and blue triangle all from 1 place, Concept Racegear here in Melbourne. They don't appear to have a website, and don't appear to be part of a national chain.

If you want more info on which HJC I have, PM me and I will let you know. Don't have it here at work.

It will be a very tight fit with a helmet if you're 6 foot.

I always race with the targas off, but have been cautioned once for my head sticking through the roof. In addition, I wear gloves now, as I've been told twice I needed to have gloves in an 'open top' car :)
As far as actual helmets go, I use a cheap-arse ($100) helmet and scrutineers check them everytime for Standards approval. I wasn't aware of any other rules apart from having to be Australian Standards approved.

you will have to learn where the bumps are on your track, and

duck down at the appropriate time to avoid bumping your head on the roof!

Generally Australian Standards will suffice for club level motorsport.

It only starts to get more rigorous and pedantic when you start racing in classes that require C3 CAMS licenses or greater.

Depending on the Supp regs for the event you're competing in, you can also get away with it not being Australian Standards, however it must meet Snell ratings (Snell is much tougher). This would apply if you purchase a helmet overseas (ie cheaper costs). Be sure to check the supp regs before hand if you take this route.

    targa shades

i am getting some shades made up so if i do hit my head then i wont hit the glass, that would be a sight smashing a targa roof.

A dedicated car race shop would be a good thing, anyone know if theres one in adelaide, i thought i heard of one before but cant remember where???

WYKKED - thanks, diddnt know the extinguisher had to be in a metal bracket, mine is plastic (will fix it).

What do the scruiteneers look for in regards to roadworthyness, ie tyres ride height etc. any limits or regulations. think my rear left looks a bit bald.

    Thanks.

    Regarding the Fire Extinguisher

Make sure when you do screw (bolt) it down, to bolt it to metal. Its all too common for people to be boting it to plastic or interior trim - in an incident it becomes a 2kg missile in the cabin!

don't think they will worry too much about the bald tyre, unless

    there is wet weather around.

make sure your battery is secure with a tie down. you won't be allowed on the track if it's just sitting on the platform without anything keeping it in place.
