Having fun replacing rear wheel bearings!

As some will know, we just bought another Zed. On the trip home, a rear wheel bearing started to die. We got it home, and I decided to buy a second hand hub assembly to replace the crook wheel bearing. New wheel bearing assemblies were around $390 from Nissan and second hand hubs from wrecking yards with a 3 month warranty ranged from $175 to $360 - go figure!

Anyway, I range the first wrecking yard - yep, they've got a TT one, it's $175 and I can pick it up straight away. Picked it up, brought it home, pulled the old hub off, and went to fit it - no fit. Damn! Couldn't get the splines to fit. Out with the micrometer, and it became obvious that a 33mm axle would not fit into a 30mm spline - The buggers had sold me an NA hub, not a TT! :( I took it back, along with the one off my car for comparison, and asked for a refund. What do I get in response? "It's a 5 stud, so it has to be for a turbo - NA's only have four studs". Um, no I said, all Zed 32s have 5 studs. "No, you're wrong. Only turbo Zeds have 5 stud" - Apparently I don't know much about Zeds. :p Anyway, after a few lessons in Zed design, I finally left with my refund. I rang the next place on my list, only to be told that the quote I'd got over the phone was wrong, and they wanted to charge me $350, not $175. Err, no thanks. Third place, Yep we have one, here it is. This one had the alloy hub on it, which had the Hicas tie rod end still fitted. OK, looks good. Has HICAS, so must be TT. I paid the money, and left with the bit. Maybe I should have been more suspicious. Got it home, went to fit it, and the Bloody thing was another NA hub, but somebody had bolted on the TT alloy housing onto it :(. SH!T!!! Took it back, and they found a TT rear end, and pulled a hub off for me. Took this one home and fitted it, replaced everything, put the wheel on, and the bearing in it has a fair bit of free play, ie it's buggered too! Well, I could cry. I could laugh. I laughed, and went and had a few glasses of red and a read of the forum. Tomorrow, it's time to get some new tyres, and go back to the bodgy bearing supplier, and have a discussion about getting a refund. In hindsight, $390 doesn't seem like so bad a price

The things we do for our Zeds :zlove:

That first price of $390 isn't looking too bad now is it?;) Second hand bearings aren't worth the hassle.

God your giving me horrible flashbacks from when I used to frequent motorcycle wreckers trying to find parts for my slightly rare suzuki rg250 gamma. Seemed like every part I ever looked at turned out to be from the wrong model even though every wrecker swore blind (or at least lied) it was the correct part, thats when they were'nt telling me their piece of garbage part was in pristine condition. Had the same experience with the zed too.

Didn't someone say "life was not meant to be easy"?
    What a horror story,
I'm about to do mine, did it take you long to install it? I suppose it was 4 hrs at the wreckers and 1 hr on the job.

All too hard. Ordered two new bearing hub assemblies. One is in Vic, and one is in Japan - 2 weeks delivery on that one. The right side bearing feels OK, but I reckon it's a bit noisy too. I might as well replace them as a pair.

Looks like I have a few weekend jobs over the next two weeks.

Gargoyle, it depends if the axle comes out of the hub spline relatively easily or not. If not and it's stuck fast, you need to remove the half axle and hub as an assembly, then find someone you trust to press out the half axle without destroying the hub. That is, unless somebody has a better method? You'll also need a 35 and a 27mm socket (from memory these sizes are right) to undo the wheel bearing lock nut and one of the hub retainer nuts.

Gazza, seriously thinking about starting an SA Zed only wreckers. That way I'd at least enjoy my job :D

tony 321, if that includes the new bearing and it is to suit a TT, then I can't say SOLD quick enough!
