Got pulled over for noisy exhaust today :x

In the whole time I have had this car (nearly 1.5 years), this is the first ever time I have been pulled over for any reason, today it happened to be the exhaust. I knew it would happen someday, because the cop is right, its very loud. Not that I particularly care.Cop: "Your exhaust is very loud. Have you modified the exhaust"?
Me: "No, it was already on there when I bought the car"
Cop: "And you got the roadworthys and registration like this?"
Me: "Absolutely. Everything you see is how I brought it"
Cop: "Well, the exhaust is very loud."At least he didn't decide to go through the engine bay with a fine tooth comb, not that there is much to see in there. This is all at 9:00am this morning driving to the doctor at a slow peak hour pace, its not like I was a moron P plater hooning around at 10pm in my R33 GTS with 25 inch rims and plenty of stickers down the side.So he's dobbing me into the EPA to get tested. I really don't think i'll even come close to passing, so does anyone in VIC have a full stock exhaust system I can borrow/buy/steal from them to pass the test with?

Can't you just buy cheap 2nd hand muffler

the restrictive ones, should cut the noise (and flow) significantly. When I changed my mufflers to the straight through, high-flow ones, the sound becomes real aggressive whereas before it was just whoosh whoosh. The rest of the car has 2.25 inch catless-back (cat removed). 8D I live in NZ mind you, you can drive around with loud exhaust during day all you want. At night the cops might get you though with the recent boyracer law x(

if your going to epa i'd assume they wont

only test you for noise but also pollution. Make sure you have at least cats on your car and stock ecu or an aftermarket that will actually pass(i dont think many will). I would make a restrictor plate between the flanges & drill a few small holes to let some exhaust pass, should drop the sound right down (infact might even overheat the cats if u try to restrict it too much not sure). Alternatively you can search around other forums for guys selling stock mufflers for example 200sx and get exhaust place to t your pipes into one muffler and that should pass with flying colours.

The whole thing is welded together

So its not as easy as just swapping the mufflers. I'd have to get flanges put on the pipes.

yep, used to have one in my old exhaust....

It definitely does quieten the exhaust. However, I found that it reduces performance dramatically so I would only have one in for a short time. Say like to pass an EPA test..:)

    How dramatic you reckon?

I got my silencer in 99% of the time to keep my ear sane and the ) away. With the silencer off, it's definitely not street legal, just painful piercing sonic with some thunder. I'm not sure if it's faster but it will feel faster with so much sound coming from it.

    Yes....

I found the silencer to reduce the power on my car. Not by much, but enough to notice it. Your basically restricting the amount of gasses that come out of the engine, and while I guess you want some backpressure you dont want to restrict it too much. I had a single outlet exhaust with a silencer, and when I put on the free flowing twin exhaust the car just had much more oomph. Cheers

    mine is the same.

silencers a bad for the performance of the car. had mine in and the guys at nissport let me no it,s a no go. I got done for being to loud and was going to get them welded in to pass but spencer helped me out you should give them a call.:YD

silencer are very easy to make if you can

do a bit of welding, very effective and will drop the db straight down as well as the performance. However they are not permitted, if u wanted to use it to pass the test it will have to be welded to the exhaust. Thats why i suggested a restrictor plate to sit between two exhaust flanges, which will be almost impossible to spot and work a treat, quick to make and remove.

Got done for the same thing!

Two weeks after i bought the car, cops seen me drive pass and send the car dealer a letter saying the exhaust is too loud and that i had to measure it. From what i remember the Sound was measured for a " TT zed 1991 @ 2800-2900 RPM 90DB" I had two decibels less. My mufler is about 6inches wide so it isn't too loud unless i wanna make it so. All in all it costs about $28.00 to measure it might be worth the hassle!Good luck, oh and make sure your cats are fine and in order otherwise the EPA will be on your ass for other stuff. If you can avoid going there do your best to do so!

the huge original japanese muffler is ok

the original japanese muffler is ok unless u modified a japanese stainless steel muffler which looks smaller but much noiser
