Re: Wouldn't stop a Zed, they are boats after all anyone notice the poor bugger who's car is 80% submurged?
Floating CARS - Sunken BOATS ... 0900 this morning I was called out for VMR (Volunteer Marine Rescue) emergengy duty. A normal 15 minute trip to our Main Beach base took an hour through flooded roads awash with cars, some floating others well under (as per Richo's pic). I detoured through back streets, across median strips, parks & footpaths, dodged accidents aplenty and finally reached our base adjacent to Seaworld. The job-sheets were piling up with boats sunk at their moorings; many of our crews flooded-in at home, unable to attend. Together with a crewie, I took SAR2 out and attended 2 total sinkings, successfully raising both vessels; APEX3 did another 2. All in the Runaway Bay/Paradise Point & adjacent Broadwater areas. The Broadwater & Seaway were brown with silty flood water & all manner of debris - sunlounges, boat accessories etc & many navigation marks either missing or well under water. Despatched by VKR (Water Police) to attend 3 serious problems in the Mermaid Waters canals, I was able to negotiate the Nerang River, at times maxing out revs just to maintain headway against the flood-waters. Unfortunately we could not pass under the Monaco St bridge due to height of the flood & have no idea what happened to the 3 vessels washed off jetties/pontoons trapped under bridges. Returning to Nerang River, I headed up toward Benowa past fully submerged jetties & pontoons broken or washed off their pilings. Many boats also sunk but we cannot touch them unless requested/authorised - their owners prolly at work and unaware of the plight. With rain easing & a bitter SW wind blowing, I called upon friends, beaching SAR2 on their front lawn and enjoyed a welcome hot soup & toast! Returning to base @ 1430, we retrieved a large concrete pontoon being swept down river & secured it to a submerged jetty, Water Police arriving in time to watch on. One saving grace, today's low tide coincided with the worst flooding. Oh, the Zed stayed dry... I used my old XF Ute with RAINX on the w/screen Tomorrow we'll be busy raising/salvaging dozens of boats...!
holy jeez, rob ..what a job and what a report .... !!! f@#*fing rain .... i spent the whole day digging trenches to release water banked up around the house and i live on a hill ...!!! my place had 125mm between 3:00am and 11:00am .... carrara had 145 mm in an hour last night ... and it stuffed my intended o2 sensor replacement planned for today !!!!! aaahhhh perhaps tomorrow ..!!! black baz ,,, in welli boots ...!!

horizontal rain is good fun to work in! especially when it is talented enough to make it up under a cover that extends past the steps of the club 5 metres, then up the stairs another 5-7 metres, all the way to the second set of doors. they sent me home just as the worst of it was hitting surfers last nite... good fun walkin to the car in that weather. driving home at a crawling pace wasnt too much fun either! no vision
Re: Heh has it been raining !? Brisbanes so boring it barely even rains here. hehe Brenton Your on the northside!! Most of the rain was between Beenleigh and Ballina. Freak winter rains, + that wacko hail storm we had a few months ago, what'z goin' on!!!!
Flooding update >>> The NEWS only tells part of the story: ~ circa $7m damage bill quoted ~ at least 2 (beautiful) ppl believed drowned, still missing at Guanaba - we've often crossed that causeway on cruiZes ~ countless homes & business's damaged, underground hi-rise car parks totally flooded... and the list goes on Richo's pic shows a road well inland, yet still impassable; my trip to VMR today requiring footpath/park detours on Seaworld Drive to get thru. One Insurance Co had recovered 100 cars by noon today ~ Tow Truck operators coming from 200k's away to clear the backlog. I raised several sunken boats & pontoons again today & this will continue for days to come. The Gold Coast was today shrouded in mist, low cloud hanging between hi-rises, but at least the sun was out
re: all the boats going down Are we talking about vessels dragged under by their moorings due to the water height, or slack owners with inadequate bilge pump systems.
Both  Some boats sank due to flood water, the volume created enormous pressure on hulls, careening them over. Most sank due to inadequate bilge pumping systems/flattened batteries and absentee owners. The majority are uninsured.
Always the case, you want rain when their is none and when it gets here, everyone wants it to stop. Sounds like farmers.
