Ok I'm starting this thread because I've been trying for days by myself to re-connect the gear box to the motor from underneath the car , having no luck at all .
I've searched heaps of threads on this as well as read the tech guides .
Having read all those I know that it either pretty much goes in straight away or it takes ages of stuffing around & it eventually goes in .

So I'm gonna try a different approach , bolt the gearbox on to the motor outside of the car , and lower them both in at the same time .
So I'd like some advise from people who have done it this way , thing I'm worried about is the gearbox smashing into the firewall , its pretty tight just lowering the motor in .
I dont have anyone to give me a hand so ...

Where in Vic are ya mate,
it'll be be spigot bush for sure giving you grief if youre getting the two lined up but 15mm apart. Best bet is to detach everything at the front of the engine and tilt it back as far as possible

I had snaped engine mounts and just let the motor tilt back, If your engine mounts havent been chaged since factory they will be snaped to.

Any way put a jack under the sump with a block of wood so you dont dent the sump and use that to adjust the tilt of the motor. bolt a pice of (rufley) 4.5cm by 25cm by 35cm the box on a hydralic pimp jack then put the box on that and strap the bot to it.

Align them both up the best you can edje the gear box foward or back on the wood for to shift the weight to get final adjustment then get it close and fit the longest bolt in as soon as it just starts tuning try on the opposite side then wind them up and it will pull the box in, thats how I did it worked well for me.

    Hope that helps
    Cheers

well I checked the clutch alignment using an aligning tool , seems to be spot on . old spigot looks ok .
I've tried loosening the engine mounts so the motor can lean back and such , tried putting the gearbox in gear and turning the tail shaft to get the spline in , i can get about an inch from going in ... but i guess the end of the shaft isn't going into the spigot ... damn it

    thanks for the tips mate
Well my original mounts were split , but I since changed to a near new second hand set that weren't split .
The jack I was using was a big trolley jack , bigger than the average ones.
The gearbox is quite steady balancing on it without bits of wood and is easy to tilt it up and down while remaining steady on it .
I didn't try a jack under the sump though , the motor seemed to tilt around pretty easy buy itself . maybe i need to try to get it angled down and make it steady with the jack .
maybe try getting some bolts in if it gets close enough
But im still interested in hearing from people who have dropped both the motor and box in at the same time

I had the same problem a few weeks back. Fiddled for ages, i could get it about a cm or so from all teh way in. I aligned the clutch, checked the spigot and everything still couldnt do it.

The way it finally worked was, i got it to this state of almost all the way in, then i got my mum to come outside and said "can you turn this thing slowly when i tell you to".

I put a long socket onto the crank pulley, and got her to turn the handle slowly, so as to line up the splines if they werent. Then I got under the car, and pushed the gearbox forward with my foot and told her to spin it slowly while i kept pushing hte box forward, but not too hard.

After a few seconds it slipped into place. I wondered if the whole time it was simply the splines not lining up.

So yeah that was my fix, someone turning crank pulley slowly to line up splines.

put it in gear, chuck the tailshaft in the vack of the box and turn it as you try to fit it, this is a must

    lol lucky bastard :) jkz
well I haven't got anyone to do that for me atm , if it seems to hard to lower the box on the motor in i'll try again that way
    Cheers

    Got the bastard :)
Pretty much slotted straight in this time , hardly any effort at all

The problem before was I left the bottom starter motor bolt in , so it was snagging on the pressure plate / flywheel ... I can't believe I missed it before
    :stupid:
its always that one little thing you miss ...

is your clutch lined up OK ,,

there is no reason why it should not go in ....

twist the box as much as you can ,,, it a pain but it will go ..

you need to turn it left and right , up and down ..

dont worry to much about the angles,, once its in the hole then straighten it up and push it in ..

if your running a twin plate clutch ,, then it must be 100% in line , as in straight ..

the spigot may stuff you around a little ,

    keep at it ..

if there is oil or grease in the spigot/crank , it will be very hard to push the shaft in , so make sure its clean..

you should not need to ,, but

if its been a pain , pull it out and turn the main shaft a very little , just to line it up , then try again ........

if the box is on a bad angle it will not go in ...
so try and judge it , by looking on top of the box , bottom, left, right, and see if it all look straight .....

    hope this helps ...
