Wondering if anyone can help. I just changed my shifter bushes in the fairly routine fashion... didn't drop anything into the gearbox area so overall happy with the job and especially the lack of play in the gears now.

However... only thing is that now there is a slight whirring noise when the gearstick is in any of the lower positions (2,4,R)... especially 2nd. I'm assuming something has dislodged and rubs against something when the shifter is low?

Sound is also there when in gear and station with the clutch in.

Is this a major problem I should worry about?

Check shifter rubber boots are re-installed properly. Sound will enter cabin if loose or damaged, exactly as you describe.

Agree with Rob, the noise is always worst in 2nd, definatly the rubber boot on top of the gear box around the stick. Make sure you secure it well because it's a pain if it keeps coming off.

3rd on rubber boot. Its the lower boot (inside the upper boot) that's loose. There are some locating tabs which are often missed.

Sounds like I know exactly what I'll be doing tonight. :)
