Hey everyone...hopefully getting my gearbox back in early next week...

Need to know a couple of things:

Any things to watch out for?

    Installation tips?

Also filler plug for the oil is rounded

    Got the flywheel machined

    New clutch + pressure plate

    Throwout bearing

    Needed new Throwout bearing carrier

Anything else I should be replacing?

    • 13mm hole for filler and drain plugs. NOT 1/2 inch.
    • Use two 500mm extension bars together onto your ratchet handle (from the back) to put the bastard top left (about 11 o'clock position) gearbox bolt in.
    • Use good oil. I use Redline Lightweight shockproof.
    • Use a water hose poked through the engine bay (past the brake booster) down into the filler hole to get the oil in. Stop when it starts to drip out the filler hole.
    • If you can't get the filler plug off, it is possible to get oil in through the breather hose, however it is slow and painful (trust me, I know) and requires positive pressure to force it in.
    • If you have changed your clutch to a non-OEM one (multi-plate), make sure you get the right size throwout bearing carrier otherwise you may not be able to engage the clutch, and then you have to take the whole gearbox off again.
    • The gearbox bolts are not all the same length. Check the FSM!
    • Do your tailshaft centre bearing at the same time (if it wasn't previously done)

Hmmm interesting you mention the throwout bearing carrier sizes....the clutch fork wasn't sitting on the throwout bearing carrier correctly and caused my clutch to free spin and heat up to the extreme and superheat my flywheel....the tabs broke on the carrier and caused the clutch to not engage at all, that and the clutch was completely metal to metal.

What would the main differnece be between the throwout bearing carriers? Because when I bought the gearbox and motor it had a twin plate....and when the clutch needed replacing I changed it to a single plate....is it possible that the carrier sizes wheren't changed hence causing my issues? Because I'm comparing the sizes of the old and new carrier and the tabs are bigger on the new one, shaft length, diameter all the same and throwout bearing size slightly smaller on the new one....

New clutch is a single plate Exedy heavy duty cushion button full face, with the old chromoly flywheel resurfaced...old setup same flywheel and Extreme 6 puck button clutch

Got near new redline shockproof oil that was in the gearbox when pulled...

Also driveshaft is a one piece...will it need to go in a certain way or sweet to just go straight back in...

    Cheers

Change the rear engine crankshaft and and front gearbox oil seals. Get the oil fill plug removed and replaced prior to refitting gearbox, use a large ezi-out.

Definitely do this!! Do not put the gearbox back in without fixing the fill plug! You will curse yourself later.

Question i've been meaning to ask someone for ages: Is it normal for oil to come out the back of the gearbox when it's tilted back? It happened on mine when I was moving it around the workshop and it seems routine to empty the gearbox first if removing the engine and gearbox as one, but why is this necessary with an oil seal back there?

Cools...got the rear engine crankshaft seal....going to chase up spigot bush not sure if my clutch kit came with one....Not sure about an ezi out how do they work?

That is to seal on the yoke of the tailshaft. With the tail shaft removed and boxed filled with oil - yes it will drain out.

If you clutch is lined up spot on and you keep the box level and in line all the way around the block you should be able to get it in relatively easy 30 mins or less.

You can fill it from that inspection plate just in front of the shifter - that's what I did.

    Nice one thanks for that

It's a big coarse thread screw - but with a reversed thread. Drill a hole into the existing bolt/plug. Then screw the ezyout in. You screw it in backwards. When it is getting tighter, you are undoing the bolt it is screwed into.

Check clutch folk for true'ness and replace the pivot bolt with the chromoly heavy duty item.

Sweet can that be sourced locally?

Also only issue holding back from getting the box back in:

    Thrust bearing carrier sizes

Have one that was on the box that looks smaller than stock

Picked up another unit looks close to stock unsure if 300zx or skyline unit (should be similar though)

Now my problem is the gbox came with a twin plate when i got it...

I'm guessing the smaller carrier was for the twin plate and didn't get swapped over when going back to a single setup?

does anyone have dimensions or a photo of the stock unit so i can compare?

    Cheers
