    OK i'm stuck
trying to remove the auto from my NA
have removed everything but cannot get the 2 bolts on top of the box to the block.... can only see one and cant even see the other let alone get to it.

who has done this before ? and whats the best way to get them?

I have only ever removed the box with the motor before and I don't want to remove the motor on this one

better yet $100 bucks to the person that can come and remove them for me i'm shitted off

LOL use a very long extension and come from behind on top.

Undo the engine mounts and the intake pipes which let the engine tilt backwards.

    Short version.
Tail shaft dropped, Exhaust dropped, gearbox stuff, wires, shifter etc, including cross member unbolted, watch that you don't crush the EGR pipework and heater pipes at rear of engine. Engine hoist connected with engine mount nuts removed, jack under rear of gearbox with plastic bag on the output shaft. Slightly drop jack holding up rear of gearbox until you can get loooong extension with universal joint lightly tapped to allow slight movement and out they will come. Easy as.

No need to touch the engine mounts, as Brisz says a long extension and uni joint with a socket will get them (or a socket with the uni joint built in is better). You need to lower the tail end of the gearbox about three inches to get the clearance to get in there.

A decent ratchting spanner can do it but you need pretty awesome flexibility, determination & a hoist to get the car at the right height so you can stuff your hand up in there.

Just take out the engine and gearbox together, its just a dirty job to take an auto box out. you can then do everything else that needs doing, it will be quicker and you can work under more controlled conditions

I have everything out.. tailshaft exhaust fluid lines wiring, flywheel bolts.

dropped the rear box mount and let the gearbox down but it has only come down about 2 inches and cant get anywhere near putting a extension up over the box.... grrr this is giving me the shits

do as Martin says much easier both together and imagine trying to get it back in as well even worse, undo cross member bolts a little and it comes out easier

This sounds like one of those sucky jobs. I was thinking of swapping my manual GB in my garage, but now not so sure it's worth the pain. Are manual GBs easier than autos to remove with engine in?

Put a piece of wood under the front of the motor and carefully jack the front of the motor up with the wood a couple of inches. This will tilt the rear of the motor enough so you can use a couple of socket extensions with uni joints on them onto the top gear box / bell housing bolts. Easy as.
    Cheers

Comparing my experience with manuals to this thread I would say yes, the hardest part by far is getting it safely onto the ground after unbolting it. Either get some body building friends to come help or do it somewhere you can maneuver a jack really easily and get your normal sized friends to help. Or use a hoist and transmission lift.

Edit: Oh and use good jack stands on a level surface!
