    Hey everyone

Just thought I'd introduce myself..my name's Justin and I'll hopefully be in the market for a 300zx in the near future.

I've done a fair bit of reading on the maintenance, insurance, and young zed driver threads so please don't refer me to them - and I apologise if this has been done to death already :p

Ok well I'm a Qld uni student with reliable part-time work and am trying to work out some cost estimates.

I'm after a 300zx TT manual 2+2..and will be willing to spend $12-15K for a good example with regular maintenance done etc. Assuming I can find such an example, what's a rough estimate for maintenance/repairs each year? 3-5K realistic?

Secondly insurance: I'm only 19 so insurance will be a bitch to say the least but I'm after full comp. I've checked out a few places and ended up with an NRMA online estimate of $2 100 which seems pretty reasonable. Anyone in my position who can recommend other insurers?

I might be crazy even thinking I can pull this off but I'm a disciplined saver and intend to carry out regular maintenance to avoid any major dramas [avoiding the redline too much is also a given..the future fairlady will see the respect it deserves ]

Sorry this post ended up so long lol...any advice concerning the above matters is greatly appreciated.

    Cheers
    Justin

    Re: First car

Yes it'll be my first car  but I'm no revhead so wrapping it around a pole is at the back of my mind.

With regard to mechanical experience, I'll be honest in saying it's pretty limited...but I'm very willing to learn :)

welcome to zedland, justin ... for the young, insurance seems to be

a bit of a nightmare .. there are allsorts of variations, combinations, excesses and so on .... there have been a couple of major posts over the past 12 months .. start with one by zed4life about 12 months ago, titled something like " how's this for cheap insurance ..??" .. it had a lot of input from young zedders and their insurance experiences .....

I would NOT recommend a ttzed for a 1st car........

they are a potent piece of machinery in even an experienced drivers hands but in the hands of a novice could become an unguided missile.

I would suggest getting a few years experience with a "normal" car before stepping up to a zed, that way you are more likely to have the zed long enough to enjoy it :zlove:

    And welcome to the forum.

    i thought

    NRMA didnt insure imports??

    Anyway, best of luck..:)

DinoZ Talks sh#t for a living.

NRMA do/did insure imports - only they charge about 50% more than

Shannons. That's going by the quote they gave me about a year ago. (But I'd had insurance cover with NRMA for about 30 years)

are you sure that $2100 quote was correct from NRMA?

my aus spec NA is only a couple of hundred cheaper than that. plus when i talked to NRMA before i got a Z, they would not insure under 25's on turbo cars. if it was in my dads name, i would not be covered if i was driving it.

    good luck

    Well You should get something

reasonable for $15thou, but remember parts cost are
high end, and youll replaceing something, maby the clutch pertty well straight away, as they seem to die
just after changeover, and do 100.000 service, theres
$2000,2500. Get a road worthy from the owner,or get it checked over properly by someone who knows what there
looking at, Im glad these things wernt around when
18-20, cause id be renting a carravan now, instead
    off owning my home;)

    I was a little surprised

Thanks for all the input guys

I was a little surprised by the NRMA quote myself but it was definately for a TT zed; I added $2900 worth of mods and put down 3 dedicated drivers [mum, dad, and myself] - was only a $450 excess for me too  If I were to go ahead with a zed purchase I'd definately speak to someone in person though, as it seems too good to be true. [Try the online estimate for yourself]

As for the TT purchase, it will still be a few more months of saving at least, but taking note of all your comments, perhaps something with slightly lower power figures should be on the cards..a 1.8L turbo 180sx perhaps? [I'm really after a turbo - can't beat the sound of a snail spooling :)]
