okay so i go to fill up today (from a quarter tank) and guess what the bowser clicks straight away as if its already full. Okay so i go to fill up again click. So then i try filling with the neck half out...nothing. Angleing the pump nothing. It seemed nothing was working so i trying another bowser and still nothing one more bowser and fail again!!!! im angry now so i drove off came back 5 mins later and guess wat the first pump i used let me fill up!?!?!?!
    Now im confused because:

    - ive always had a fuel smell since i bought the car
    - it wouldnt fill up at three different pumps (duh)
    - and then it did fill up after some driving
    - when i was trying to fill up it overflowed slightly (not spill onto paint out but some flowed out)
    - ive got damaged paint on the outside of the car under the fuel tank flap which i always thought some lazy owner never knew how to fill up petrol.

    soooooo me very confused....?

ima go mechanic 2morow but some info would be much appreciated

Most people have this problem here mate you just have to jigle the pump or turn it on a slight angle left or right so I have found.

Also the fuel smell could be from the rubber O ring on ur filler cap mine came off and sat in the nosel I thought it was suposed to sit there lol.

Do you get fuel leaking on the side of your car were the filler cap is some times like just a little?

If so just get a new filler cap or a new rubber for it.

Yep just a slight angle either way fixes it

    lol im not dumb

    i angled it
    half out
    all the way in
pump slowly all got no result..... besides i always fill up at that same pump at that servo. Only after driving it filled up 4 some reason. I filled up 3/4 so im not gonna try again anytime soon but ive never had a problem with the pumps. never had to angle or put in it different amounts or anything. its so strange

It's NOT "strange" at all. As most other people have told you, this is a very common occurence with many different cars(not just Z32's). It is due to the fact that the trigger of the fuel hose nozzle is activated by "backpressure" from the fuel tank(this is how it's designed to work), and some cars and nozzles are more easily activated than most other ones are:zlove:.

and sometimes the petrol pumps are just shit and dont work

i find old machines are particularly bad (especially at woolworths only servos)

I think the point he is making is that it is strange for him since he's never had the problem with the car before and usually fills up at the same servo and same pump without drama.

I am trying to find out what flap thing on end of filler neck is for. Maybe this could also be problem as it seems to seal filler neck(tank side) and somehow releases pressure when taking cap off. Did you get usual hiss when taking cap off the first time?

    Thanks Ben,
I understand exactly the point he is making(but my advice remains the same).
90% of the time it's not the car that is causing this problem, it is the pump nozzle(they are often very sensitive, and will click off with almost no flow). It has happened to me many times (with the same bowser and two different cars)and then it may be several months before it happens again on that bowser.
When other members have suggested altering the angle of the nozzle, they do not mean "push it further in" or "pull it further out"(God, this is starting to get X Rated) they mean change the angle of the nozzle relative to the fuel inlet pipe.

So how can you tell whether you've got a full tank or not? If you disregard the clicks, how can you tell if you're about to overfill? lol

I had this happen to me on the weekend, the cashier dude told me wiggle it around, and yeah, it worked. He made me use a nozzle from the other side of the bowser, so I couldn't see how much was actually going in (or how much it was costing:cool:), It clicked at 3/4 of the way, and I thought that was it, it was full. But to my dismay, I started the car, the fuel gauge slowly went up and sat on 3/4. I'll check my receipt again tonight, but I have a feeling there are problems with it. My car is an Aus spec, so maybe its just and old cap/inlet?

    Cheers
    Greg.

    Easily solved.

Just keep filling it until you can see petrol coming out of the fuel cap area. old bowsers are always shit and click heaps before they are really full
