Gday Everyone, I've got a 90 z32 2+2 and i was wondering what the fuel tank size is on one of these suckers. i know there is an obvious way to find out however i hate walking when i run out of fuel and the RAC take too damn long not to mention dragging crap from the tank through the filter and pump. 72 litres edit; that is til EMPTY. I think the fuel light comes on around 50 something litres depleted so you still have a tonne of fuel left in reserve once you see the little light start a' glowing
That is if the globe hasn't died in the Warning Light. REMEMBER....the Fuel Pump is cooled by being immersed in petrol, so DON'T run the tank down low or you risk damaging the pump over a period of time.
Oh bummer I thought the globe only came on when you had like 7 litres left... guess mine doesn't work then.
It's not too hard to replace. There are 5 globe holders on the rear of the instrument cluster(4 are for cluster illumination and 1 is for the Fuel Warning Light)they can be accessed by removing the hood over the cluster.
As Chili said. Don't be tempted to replace the globe with a LED with the usual resistive load (560ohm for a 20mA LED). LEDs need so little current to fire up (20mA) you will find your warning light will be on all the time. No doubt a LED would work if a higher resistive load is used, but it would take a bit of trial and error to work out the right value. I need to do that sometime to get the warning LED in my new Fuel Gauge set up working properly:
Actually the fuel pump is cooled by the fuel being pumped through the pump. In the 2 seater fuel tank, the tank sits in the top half of the tank. Only the fuel pickup is in the bottom half of the tank. So if the pump needed to be immersed in fuel, you couldn't run with less than half a tank of fuel. If you try sucking too much air through the pump, it can overheat and die. So you don't want to run down to the last couple of litres very often.
I drive a 2+2 and my Fuel Pump is submerged in petrol most of the time. Are you saying that being immersed doesn't contribute to the cooling in any way? I have been reading this advice on this forum for the past nine years Ian(and this is the first time I have ever seen it challenged). What's your excuse for waiting so long?
Didn't you hear the man, Chili? He said that 2+0 pumps are NOT immersed, a fact which I noticed when contemplating doing a TT conversion on my zed and the associated fuel components i'd need to change. Not challenging that being immersed in fuel doesn't help it cooling, however it would seem a vast oversight on Nissan's hehalf if they had designed such a feature to fail on 2 seaters alone. It is certainly not good to run your tank down to near empty for fear of picking up sediment off the bottom, and as Ian said fuel sloshing around in the tank sucking up air would overwork it as well. Has anyone actually ever tested (after a sustained running period) the temperature difference between the air/vapours in the fuel tank, and the fuel of which a lot has been through a hot engine bay several times already? I see this all the time and its bloody wrong. Do you reckon any sediment sits in top of the fuel ? and only gets to the bottom when the tanks empty. Sediment is on the bottom all the time and the fuel pick up sucks from the bottom all the time. If there is any sediment in the tank at all. Its always being sucked up by the pump and collected in the filter regardless of whether the tank is full or empty.
ah haha good point Graham, never thought about it like that No doubt a lot of fuel tanks are dirty though, a testiment to the sock filter thing on the pickup and the fuel filter in the engine bay doing their job I guess, i remember somebody saying a while ago that the connecting pipe in between both sides of their 2 seater tanks must be blocked as they could never get 72 litres from a tank? Might have been one of the NZ mob :zlove:
Wrong again ... Have never seen anything but squeaky clean fuel tanks, and I've seen the inside of quite a few!
im currently at work, dont get paid till thurs so cant fuel up, and my fuel gauge line is on the last quarter line. how much fuel would i have left and how far should it get me? work is 40km from home
i've run mine empty and the engine stalled and only managed to get 70.5 in there. trying to get 72L into the tank is near impossible. as for the myth about dirty sediment, your fuel filtre will prevent any of that entering the fuel rail so it's nothing to worry about as long as you change it regularly. however when you're really low you can hear the pump whining from being starved of fuel so as ian said, you shouldn't be doing it often.
If you have a 2+2 then from FULL to EMPTY is around 60 ltrs(with another 12 ltrs below that)so 1/4 on the gauge should leave you about 25-27 ltrs(15 on the gauge, and 12 in the reserve).
Thanks for that tip! I've been meaning to replace that light for a long time and always assumed an LED swap would do the trick. I need to replace an LED in one of my side pods, so I'll do this at the same time..
