OK, my FPCU suddenly died on Saturday night so I've done the bypass as described in the Tech Section. Now everything works fine, except the fuel pump buzzes like mad and I'd swear it's getting louder. Ignoring the buzzing sound (the stereo helps wonderfully) is there any significant reason I should get the FPCU fixed/repaired at all? I'm guessing the pump is at risk of suffering an early death but is there any other concerns?
when you bypass the FPCU it runs the fuel pump at full pressure. thats why its making that loud noise all the time now.
I know. More what I'm asking is: if I'm happy to live with the buzz, is there any other reason I should bother fixing the FPCU? I'm very tempted to simply remove the dead unit from my Z and throw it in the shed with all the other components I no longer need.
How long is a piece of string? Some bypassed FPCU fuel pumps last years. Others die in a few months. The FPCU is there for a reason and if your zed is a daily driver, plonk the $75-85 for a 2nd hand one from Cresta or pull yours apart. Usually just a small component (power supply?) dies and can be fixed with a competent electrical person.
Yes I've done one, have parts for another. It's a box diode &/or voltage regulator that die... easy to solder new components in place.
Alright, I think I'll pull the box out and see if I can fix it. I've never soldered a thing in my life though. I just wish things wouldn't keep breaking. That would be nice.
I've had a look and it's got me stumped as to how I'm gonna remove the FPCU from my car. I can see it and reach it easy enough but, unless I'm missing something obvious, there's no way to actually remove it from the car body. Does anyone have any experience with this? I've got a 2 seater BTW.
