if you don't want to sell it mega cheap (ie, ~$5k), then your

best bet is to drop a second hand engine and then sell it. can get a decent 89 TT for ~$10k from japan, so no point paying more than $6k for something that needs a new engine. good luck.

    can you get phones?

you sound like one of those guys who can get the latest mobile phones.

    your status is defiantly talkative.

the cars value is in the 18-20k range if all was well.

im wiling to knockoff a fair amount to get the engine fixed. plus with the piece of mind that the engine has been rebuilt stronger then ever along with the turbos.

ive got a qoute form evo r in melb where they have done a little bit of work on my car in the past, they said they will fix the engine under 5k.

its a worriless car a good buy for some one...

just as your status is definetly newbie.

anyhow, not bagging you out. was trying to help actually.

i was in a similar position not that long ago. i found that people don't want to touch something that needs work, unless it is going very cheap. understandable i suppose. i have no doubt you will get more money by fixing it yourself and then selling it.

get a second hand engine ($3k), put it in, sell your old engine ($700). sell your car. or get the heads reconditioned ($5k sounds like a reasonable quote, as long as the bottom end isn't being touched). burnt valve yes?

    latest phones? yeah....

    I agree with J4Play

Lamba: An auto is worth less than a manual. I have an immaculate black '89 5 speed TT 2+2 on the way from Japan at the very moment - landed, cleared delivered to my door in December for $14,400 and I now think even that might be paying too much.

I'm afraid you won't get $18K for an auto these days. Best not to spend too much on a new motor unless you figure on keeping it forever.

    Thats funny

I always thought that autos cost more?? Thats how it usually works, isn't it?

Only costs more when brand new

I guess the demand is in the manual versions though.

$5K I think is too little for a car like that IMO. Think about if you bought it for 8-9K, and did a major full engine rebuild + a few extra goodies for 10Kish. So after it finally comes to $18-19K, you have a very strong realible fully rebuilt zed with quite a few mods making a good amount of power. :)

Now if someone put an ad saying all the mods and the fact the motor has only just been fully rebuilt for that price, it would not be unreasonable would it?

    Supply and demand

Manuals give a more envolving driving experience and hence in sports cars, where people tend to drive for pleasure rather then just A->B, people tend to want a manual. More demand for them means less supply and up goes the price :)

That's true - in anything regarded as a 'sports/performance' car, autos...

are generally cheaper. It's true of the Z, GTO3000, etc. Expensive performance cars like Ferrari and Lamborghini don't even make autos, and the closest Porsche will get to an auto in their expensive range is their triptronic(?).

    12k mark

    Hi YellaZed,

If you paid $14,400 for your 89 model z. I'm sure my 92 targa fairlady ,with fat volk rims mod turbos etc is worth a little more than that even if the transmission is auto.

Im not asking for 18k anyhow.

The car is immaculate it has very exotic features like these smooth cut back mirrors. Atermarket front bar.
There's also a few power mods.

If i were shopping for a z i would consider the car as that all that needs to be done is rebuilding the engine which can be done professionally for under 5k with warranty from evo r. ounce that's done then you'll have a car that turns heads because all the nessasary mods that take a car from factory to outstanding are done its defiantly one of the better looking zs ask me for images..

Not to mention feeling confident about the car and understanding that you wont have to go through the problems that ive gone through.

I think as it is, a fair price that im willing to sell it for would be around the 12k mark.

    12K Mark

    Lamba:

I didn't want to start an argument about prices of Zeds. Every car has it's unique attributes and after all, the price is only what someone else is willing to pay. I simply make the point that anyone who wants to browse the J-Spec site or Sports & Prestige, etc, etc will see well-optioned Zeds at prices from $7K to breathtakingly optioned units at $22K, and it's a fact that a manual will be 2-3K more than an auto, when comparing like levels of condition. It's not simply my opinion, it's fact.

My advice is simply: don't give your car away to vultures who circle over a dead carcass. Fix it and keep it, or hold out for your price. It appears to be worth more than what you are being offered.

    Not for Sale

    Lamba:

Take a look on e-bay - there's a group in Brisbane with a half cut starting at $2,400 - Item number: 2493134742 listed for the second time with no bids. Could be a cheap option for replacing the motor in your car.

You could sell off the extra bits and recoup a few dollars.
