Foam Filling Chassis

tassuperkart Its a lie I tell you!

I KNOW that my Zed had munted dampers and sacked out springs and there was little on the road that could out steer it.
Sorry Instamatic but if you reckon that you can determine the chassis flex of a Zed as akin to "wet noodles" then your in la-la land!
Try pumping up the tyres.......... Tyre squirm and excessive slip angle are often the culprit.

C'est la vie!

What makes yours so good rollin ? In your opinion i am sure you have driven many .. . . .
your zed mus tbe rooted, my 300zx is one of the best handling cars ive driven, and others have said the same. And i have driven alot of cars, believe me.
i like my zed but seriously all z32s have terrible chassis compared to newer sports cars the rigidity in even just a 350z is way better

I've driven everything from the Barina Spark to the V12 Vantage. If you think I don't know what constitutes a good chassis, you're in la-la land.

"Try pumping up the tyres"... c'mon mate, even with the correct tyre pressure the Z32 isn't as great as you think it is. It was good enough back in the day, but not any more.

I dont know what makes it good. for my driving style and a car with a decent bit of power i think that good springs and shocks are better than coilovers, im not into drifting so excessivley stiff doesnt work for me.

I recently fitted a set of powertrix coilovers to a boosted zed thats around 300rwhp. a nice product they are and not as stiff as teins etc. we set them with minimal preload on the spring and dampers on soft. the car feels nice to drive and stable through corners but is far more willing to step the rear out. Any steering input in 2nd gear wide open throttle in the dry will send it sideways which want the case before. If those were on my zed with another 100rwhp it would be a real challenge getting the power down

All of my suspension components are in top condition, but i dont have any spherical bearing joints or solid mounted anything, in my opinion that stuff should stay on the race track, i use mine only on the street.

So my only advice for street car handling is dont go too low, too stiff or too much solid bushings

Alelujah brother...

100% agree. The Z32 is & has been one of the most praised cars in existence.

Change the suspension to suit your needs. I & my friends have done that (different cars obviously) to meet our personal taste in handling. Nobody is looking for super perfection but enough to get the grin factor from ear to ear and enjoy on the occasional spritited driving. Anything over that, is for bragging.

In addition, everyones taste of handling is different. What I consider too hard suspension setup is perfectly fine for another person and vise versa.

My personal taste is minimal body roll and middle of the road suspension stiffness.

Also people bag the Z31 as being too soft from factory. My friend with a Gazelle with full Z31 running gear has upgraded the suspension and it handles unbelievably well.

It comes down to you setting up the suspension to suit YOUR taste.

But there is such a thing as too stiff suspension. Still need to have suspension travel to keep the wheels on the ground and not up in the air during fast concering on a bumpy road which = what traction??

yeah look the z32 has been praised as one of the best hence way i got it all i am saying is for the.200 bucks the consensus among mmany ppl is its a.great mod.that gets rid of all the creaks rattles and tightens the car up i.will find another test report done to a.200sx great for.ppl to look.at the general feedback on this.mod is.it makes.the.car feel new again and makes a good difference in handling i am going to do.it and report back.my thoughts to.settle.it :-D

I have seen this post but the experiment has flaws . . .research has told me.this.stuff feels.like.the.car.has a.cage for a cage is pretty full on for street and if cops look and see it they will go over the car with a fine tooth comb even if the cage is.legal makes cop think straight away the car is.a.Goldmin for defects. . .

Rather than go off a flawed.test i look to.see.what car gurus suggest and have proof works apparently the Nissan q45 uses it straight from factory in their chassis . . .

some one who seemed to know alot about cars once told me to laminate carbon fiber is the bendy areas , im not sure how well it would work but worth looking into i guess

Is our Z's suspension so bad compared to today's cars? Apart from the electronic suspension control our suspension configuration is supposed to be pretty good. Our cars weight and weight distribution is on par with new cars, we also have variable ratio steering. With new suspension components our cars should handle as good if not better than so called new sports cars. Enlighten me if I am way off base.:zlove:

I was looking into caging my car but will be very costly the way i wanted it done and to bulky otherwise for a street car.
If this foam does 15% half of what they say it does its still worthy in my eyes

For noise and vibration suppression it would work wonders. For chassis stiffening... Foam is still foam...

Mitch Has one gear: GO

Grab an empty kitchen paper cardboard roll, and bend it in half.
Grab another, and stuff it full of something- eg foam, or even packed tissues or newspaper. It does add support to the structure, but you're right... it does have limitations.
The difference between the two is what you are chasing for your performance gain. If you want the car to be really stiff, you'd build a proper cage for it, but seems superfluous for a road car.
